I had my first batch of monthly auctions last week and I had an actual good old-fashioned bidding war! This lot of Vegas Golden Knights hockey cards had an opening bid of $14.99 and ended at $53. Two bidders (one was a repeat buyer) went back and forth. I made a nice $40 profit instead of my usual $8 to $12. This will probably not happen again for a year so I wanted to take a moment where we could all appreciate it. $53!!!
I believe this $75 sale was my last Marilyn Monroe lobby card, or I should say the last one I am excited to list. I have one more which has a big tear and I don’t have an appropriate sized plastic case for it. So for now, it will sit on a shelf until I figure out a plan.
This autographed letter written by an old-time college basketball coach sat in my many death piles for over two years (!!!). I’ve gotten a lot more organized lately, and probably have developed more interest and skill in listing stuff like this. This sold within a day for $50 and I paid about $10 for it.
This signed Old 97s CD went unsold at auction with a $14.99 starting bid and then sold the day after I relisted it at $29.99 BIN/BO for a $20 offer. Paid just $1 at an end of season library sale which had a bunch of other signed CD’s. I’ve sold a few and that’s more than made up for the junk I purchased. Improving that junk/good buy ratio is always the name of the game!
What did you sell this week?

@Craig congrats on the bidding war.
Sale of the week was something I purchased arriving on the last day of an estate sale. Lots of people passed on it and I got it for half price $5 https://www.ebay.com/itm/234968284403

It was such a joy to see an old fashioned bidding war, reminded me of buying on eBay a decade ago.
Your needlepoint is so striking visually. I love the colors. So the sale price doesn’t surprise me completely (especially considering the size of it) but I’m still so curious. How do you research and price something like that?

@Craig on the edges it usually has the manufacturer name or at last country. I believe people are looking for European ones. I can’t recall the comps for this one in particular. If I think it’s special though, typically someone else will. I use the keywords to try to rope in people who aren’t normally looking for this sort of thing. I also really enjoy saving these works. I learned the hard way not to save all of the baby blankets and quilts. They don’t sell well for me.

I wonder what that old 97’s cd would have went for if you had it listed last year after the guardians of the galaxy christmas special. They had a moment for sure. I spent some time on their apple music channel.

I have a bad tendency to let things sit in death piles, but surprisingly I only had this one for maybe a month before I listed it and the sale happened after about two months. So I missed the bubble completely. No huge outlier sales in Terapeak going back two years unless I am not using the right search terms which is definitely possible. Kind of surprises me, but this is truly a collector’s kind of item and I would think music buffs have a few higher priorities related to their favorite band (live shows, merch) before you get to unauthenticated signed CDs.
I was way into alt-country for a bit, less the last few years. The Old 97s have shifted in and out of the genre over 20+ years and I’ve liked it all.

Sooo much stuff scavenged this week, but ALSO sooo much stuff sold this week!

The Legend of Drizzt R A Salvatore 2008 Collector’s Edition Hardcover Book 1
This book was on the death pile shelf I cleared off last week in my inventory storage. It’s been sitting there for YEARS! Sold for full price within 24 hours.

Spider-Man Pogs 1995 Marvel Near Complete Set 1-120
This WAS a complete set at one point. Somehow two of them fell out and I couldn’t find them. Out of frustration I set them aside and didn’t list them for over a year. Sold within 24 hours for full price. This was from a MASSIVE amount of POGS I bought at Goodwill. I’ve made quite a bit of money off of that pipeline and the items sold much faster than I thought they would.

The Next Evolution in MCAT Prep Blueprint MCAT Review Books – All 6 Books
Paid $1 each at a Goodwill where they were just sitting randomly on top of a high pallet bin of books. Sold for full price

Louis Vuitton Bidart Espadrille Monogram Denim Shoes 12 US 11 LV
From the premium hoarder collection. Sold within 24 hours on offer. I really wanted to cross that $500 threshold, but it wasn’t worth risking the sale. Note: The buyer did not request the chewed on box. LOL! Why someone would spend this kind of money I personally don’t understand but I do realize money is subjective. How I view $500 now is completely different than someone else views it.

Carhartt Detroit 6BLJ Jacket Mens Size 44 Blanket Lined Union Made USA Vintage
If you ever see a carhartt jacket with a wool lining it is a BOLO for sure. This is the second one of these Detroit jackets I’ve sold this year. Paid about 25 cents for this one as it was part of a $5 fill a bin sale at a yard sale back in July.

Spotlight On Music Grade 2 Cd Set Macmillan/McGraw-Hill CDs Curriculum
Sold the first of 4 of these music sets for full price. Paid $5 each at goodwill a couple weeks ago.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/266391333680
Radio Shack RC Car Lightning High Speed Digital Proportional Car Works
Sold on offer for $60. The buyer message me that he would leave positive feedback even if it didn’t work. It does work, but that peace of mind knowing I’m not gonna have a picky buyer is worth it on a vintage electronic item.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/266413826004
Vintage Pinball Arcade Coin Box 8”x5.25”x2.25”
This one is a fun one. This was on the death pile cart. It came in an old arcade cabinet I bought for a project I never completed (Note: That cabinet is also on ebay here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/265915378621)
It did not go to that cabinet and I had no idea what pinball it would go to. As I was cleaning I went to chuck it in the trash pile, hesitated, and decided to list it. I didn’t even clean it! Slapped $30 on it and added the dimensions. Sold within 12 hours.
It seems like every time I hesitate to list an item, then list it anyways even damaged it sells quickly. Such a strange quirk of this business!

Spider-Man Pogs 1995 Marvel Near Complete Set 1-120
Pogs, that’s crazy. That’s junk from my childhood bedroom, along with all the baseball cards and TTM (through the mail) autographs. Not a lot of near-complete sets of base baseball cards from the mid to late 90s selling for $60 these days. Maybe a few premium sets with key rookie cards. Inserts, on the other hand…there is MONEY in 90’s inserts, especially the lower serial numbered ones in basketball, football and baseball. Search 1997 precious metal gems on eBay next time to see how much. Add green (the rarest color) to the end of your search and you’ll have to pick up bits of your brain off the floor and walls.

Very cool to see a Wizards of the Coast book from the same era. Your listing redirects to one which is priced at $40 with a $55 BIN, so I think you got a nice price on yours.

Your last line is something I have been thinking about a lot recently. I also don’t understand why people spend this kind of money, but there is always the possibility that they’re reselling or “investing.” I see this all the time within the trading card world, and often get a reminder that not everyone who flips or “invests” is good at it, or even all that committed to the process.
I like to think about these random low feedback buyers who occasionally buy luxury items (like brand name shoes or expensive baseball cards) once every few months and do something, who knows what, the rest of the time when they’re not buying on eBay. Buyers who I imagine have like eight expensive things in a drawer or in a closet. They all have jobs with important titles and do things like play racquetball. I understand these buyers more with cards (which can fluctuate in value) than I do with something like shoes, but maybe shoes fluctuate in value too.
And of course some people really care about wearing certain brands, like to the point it’s a part of their identity, and that is the most bizarre thing to me of all. Like I can’t wrap my head around it. It’s even more bizarre to me than buying $500 on “junk”, which is something you and I do pretty often. One person’s trash, another person’s treasure?
It seems like every time I hesitate to list an item, then list it anyways even damaged it sells quickly. Such a strange quirk of this business!
I saw this with my big Chicago haul (no spoilers) a few times. But this works best with more expensive items or very unique ones. I think those buyers are more forgiving, especially if you accurately describe the damage to their precious.

When I researched this one it was apparent that it sold quickly for whatever price the item was listed for or started in auction for – demand far outstripped supply. I priced mine higher than any previous sold and just as I suspected it sold for full price. I considered going $99.99 with best offer but since I was just trying to clear up space and list old death pile items I was pricing everything competitively.
