Sale of the week October 1-7, 2023

This was a week where 26 items sold in my eBay store and I realized that I could post about most of them for this thread if I wanted to. It was a reminder that I am another step beyond the days of list anything and everything, hope it sells, buy more and list more.

In “wow, can’t believe this sold” I sold two 1980s Frank Frazetta calendars for $34 gross/$15 net. Bought for $1 and $1 respectively from one of my favorite consignment sellers. This was all Terapeak, not an area I know well at all. Could have made a few extra bucks if I hadn’t used a priority regional box to ship. But I don’t list and sell weird stuff like this only for the profit. Now I know a little bit more about another artist and niche, and that’s one of my favorite things about selling online.

An Igor Markevitch Deutsche Grammophon CD box set from my Chicago haul went for $50 at auction. I had received a $60 offer within a day of listing it but like a silly goose, held out for more and didn’t get it. So I sent it to auction at half my buy it now price and hey, at least it’s sold now. Another reminder that sometimes the first offer is the best offer and haggling over ten bucks may not be worth your time.

This PSA certified autograph photo of two fighters from the very first UFC fight, including the legendary Royce Gracie, sold from an auction listing which I also allowed offers. The starting bid was $24.99 and the buyer offered $50 which had been my buy it now/best offer price before I sent the listing to auction. So that was a thrill. I bought this photo for a $1 opening bid from a consignment seller who must have messed up the shipping table and charged $25 shipping, but I had about 20 other items in the order as well so if I want to get technical, I can always split the shipping cost between everything in the order. Not a huge profit regardless of the math, but a few bucks and a good story day after day is a pretty nice life.

The great Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus died late last week at 80 years old, and I had a few of his jersey cards in my store inventory. Card selling is not necessarily about playing celebrity death pool, but every so often it is — in this case, all three cards in my inventory sold within a day of his passing. I loved selling this jersey card because it had noticeable damage, but this jumbo jersey card is the best story. With that one, I received a $50 offer from a buyer who also sent a sob story message which was kind of incoherent…then while that was marinating in my brain, I received an offer from another buyer for $55 which contained no sob story. When you sell online, sometimes you make the decisions about what offers to accept or how to negotiate. Other times, there’s really no choice at all — just click the right button and go about your life.

I make a trip through the shipping department every day at my day job to check for bubble wrap. Sometimes it is in the floor in the department and sometimes it’s in the dumpster. As I checked the dumpster I saw their old zebra label machine. I fished it out of there, took it home, tested/cleaned/listed for parts or repair. Sold quickly for full price.

I say this regularly, but power tool battery chargers are almost always BOLO. They can be tested with a multimeter. The batteries can also be tested to determine if they hold a charge.
