I’ve recently picked up enough Elvis Presley worn memorabilia cards to perhaps stitch together a toddler-sized shirt (ok maybe more like a bib), but instead of starting a new career as a seamster (sewist?) I’ve decided to stick to what I know best and sell them all, and the third I’ve sold is now on its way to the UK. No word yet on whether the buyer is an Elvis impersonator who wants a very authentic piece of fabric for his own warm-up suit.
My high and low sales of the week were cards of the phenom Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes, and together they highlight what to look for (and what not to) in ultra modern cards. This jersey card netted me $11 after fees and about $6 after COGS, and this would be a $1 to $2 card if it were most players since it’s a plain jersey piece. This autographed jersey #27/85, on the other hand, netted me $146 after fees and around $60 after COGS. Skenes was drafted just last year, so these cards from his amateur and collegiate career are likely at their absolute peak now, until his official MLB rookie cards come out later this year and next year.
Skenes hype is so big right now that I’ve been selling Pirates lots on a weekly basis, with this 10 card grouping for a net of $28 my latest. Usually I only have this type of sell-through rate with very popular teams (Yankees, Red Sox, Braves) or first-place teams (Phillies, Orioles) though I’ve also noticed that midwest teams with a young star player (Pirates, Reds) also sell very well. Whether these trends will hold beyond this year, who knows but I’m happy riding the wave for now. Now that these lots have become a consistent part of my business, my buying habits have changed and I have a pretty solid formula to keep my lot pipeline constantly flowing. My goal is always to keep my COGS around $10 for the 10 cards — something like $7 for the 5 cards in the first two scans and $3 for the other 5 cards. It is important to make sure the players are popular and not just random guys who played for them team once. Recently I have been experimenting with a little more expensive lots, like this one. I’ll spend $15 to make a lot that sells for $40 gross/$30 net if I can sell it in less than a week, since a big part of a successful reselling business is constantly keeping things moving.
What did you sell this week?

I had alot of uninteresting low dollar sales this week. It’s good because those old crappy items are selling, but it sucks because it kills my ASP. Here are a few of the more interesting sales:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/266682192469
MXS Die Cast Motocross Dirt Bike Rider LOT Road Champs
Took an offer of $100. I paid around $5. This is one of those scenarios where I did about 10 minutes worth of research into individual pieces and just decided to list as a lot.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/266361243411
Burberry Brit Steadman Men’s Jeans Slim Black Size 40 x 32
A premium Hoarder item. Sold on offer for $150. Why would anyone buy Burberry that isn’t wool plaid? Eh, whatever. They’re happy and I’m happy.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/266860601345
The Butchers (DVD) 2014 Horror Movie
I always pick up crappy random Horror VHS and DVDs if cheap. You never know when you’ll hit paydirt. Sold for full price.

Poor Travis Pastrana figure with a bum leg! Nice $100 sale though. What is your packing method for all those little guys? I assume you’re not bubble wrapping each one individually…
The Butchers DVD looks like exactly the kind of junk horror that I love on a rainy weekend. Well, maybe love is the wrong word. One of the reviews on its Wikipedia page calls it “an abhorrent sleazy little movie that will only serve to repel and disgust anyone that’s unfortunate to come across it.”
Sounds like $30 well spent to me!

It was all in a zip lock bag. I use a box at least 2” bigger on all sides, put down some heavy duty bubble wrap, throw in bag, wrap over bubble wrap and top off with more.
it gets there just fine.
As for the horror movie, I have no clue what it’s about! I just knew it was worth listing individually. The buyer t left me positive feedback.
I figure the buyer would either be an obscure collector or someone who worked/acted in the movie.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/335462517188 Yarn sold in minutes to basically “theyarnlady” handle on Ebay. $6 into $180. Original retail price was $300 for four balls.
Other notable sales were pieced out brand new make up set from the QVC lady haul selling off pretty quickly. https://www.ebay.com/itm/335455489832 https://www.ebay.com/itm/235621749936 I kept some of the brushes from the set (plastic packaging was already open and incomplete). Nobody like that at the flea last week unfortunately. The random drop ins are the best people to buy from and they are usually in the late arrival area.

Christine, do you think the ebay yarnlady is this yarn lady?
I get sales like that every so often where it’s someone with an obvious online presence…always interesting to see…and love when they pay full price. I knew there was money in yarn, cross-stitch etc but $180. Wow! Great sale!!

Sale of the week, a vintage transformer (not the toy) for £200, BIN.
Return of the week, a vintage transformer, -£200. Chinese buyer made a mistake, wrong voltage. This is the same transformer that was bid up by a couple of Chinese buyers to £220 a few months back, only for the highest bidder fail to pay. This latest buyer paid straightaway.
The continuing saga of Chinese buyers seeking vintage high-voltage transformers. I think, maybe, middle class audiophiles are building their own valve amplifiers, and then cracking open a couple of Tsingtao beers and relaxing to “Raid On The White Tiger Regiment”.
