Does this mean wool or synthetic? I did a burn test on fur and it was similar to what happened to this fiber. I finally figured out it was real by looking at the same coat on eBay. They were all real fur. -

what did it smell like? did is smell like burning plastic and ball up in to a hard bead? that’s synthetic. if it turns into an ash that can be crushed into a powder, it’s natural.

Okay the rug pile definitely goes to ash. The fringe kind of breaks apart. I think the fringe could be cotton. I found this online:
“How to tell if material is cotton?
Cut small pieces of each fabric you want to test, such as 2″ squares. Place a piece of the fabric in your fireproof container and ignite one corner. Pay attention to the odor of the smoke. Cotton smells like burning paper and has an afterglow at the end of the burn.”It definitely has the afterglow.
They smell different from each other. My sniffer is never reliable.
The seller who is an antique dealer said it was synthetic. Another dealer said it was hand woven and wool. I asked a friend if he was reliable and she said ya he knows his stuff. He leaned in and said you stole it. You never know who knows what right?!

The photo of the burned section looks like it’s little burned plastic balls. But the smell test is really the key. If its synthetic, it’ll smell like plastic.
