I just got a message from a buyer that purchased an expensive vintage Ralph Lauren coat from me. He received it a couple days ago and left a very nice positive feedback. This morning I get a message from him stating that while the coat is very nice, it doesn’t fit him. He says he had one like it already and used that one as a gauge for comparing in size when buying a new one, but the coat he bought from me is too large for him to wear (btw I included detailed measurements etc. in my description). I’m a little worried that maybe he’s trying the old switcheroo and is going to return the similar coat he already had (while keeping the one I sold him) and get his $ returned. This certainly might not be the case, but it does happen often on Ebay as I’m sure many of you know.
He mentions in his message: “So I have the option of asking you for return options”. I’ve never had a return request from an international order/GSP sold item and after doing some Googling, I see many people aren’t too clear on the rules (including myself). Curious if anyone here has experience. I do offer to accept returns w/ a 15% restocking fee and buyer pays shipping, but I’ve never had an international buyer want to return something. In this situation, who pays for the return shipping/fees/taxes/etc.? The coat isn’t defecting or not as described. Because he bought something that didn’t fit (even though measurements were included in the description) am I responsible for paying all of this? I haven’t replied to him yet as I want to make sure I don’t stick my foot in my mouth and handle this correctly.
Thanks for any advice!

If the buyer is choosing to return the item because they simply changed their mind, then the buyer pays all return fees. We always let buyers return items for any reason.
Just say “if you’re unhappy, please return the item”. Keep it simple. If the buyer for some reason changes their story when opening the return and blames you, then you now have this message where he admits he just changed his mind.
One thing you said doesnt strike true:
I’m a little worried that maybe he’s trying the old switcheroo and is going to return the similar coat he already had (while keeping the one I sold him) and get his $ returned. This certainly might not be the case, but it does happen often on Ebay as I’m sure many of you know.
This has never happened to us in eight years of selling on eBay after shipping thousands and thousands of items. I’m sure you can find rare stories if it happening, but I think this is a fear sellers have than a reality.

Thanks, great advice as always, Jay. I spoke w/ buyer and he knows he has to pay the return shipping/custom fees/15% restocking fee if he wants a refund. When all said and done, he’d only be getting back maybe 30 bucks, so I said he’d probably be better off listing it for sale on Ebay to recoup his money. He said he’s going to think about it. Either way, he’s been an ideal customer so far so it’s went smoothly.
About the “ol switcheroo”, yeah maybe it’s just one of these Ebay urban myths but I am always hearing/read about it being done. I think you may be correct.
Thanks again!

This is why we learned to avoid the eBay community forums. There seem to be full of sellers who only have bad experiences with buyers. Every buyer is ripping them off. Leads me to believe they are acting out fears more than reality. or just good excuses as to why they aren’t successful at selling online.

Yeah, sounds about right to me. I usually stay clear of the Ebay Community Forums unless I have an issue or question and Google leads me there (which honestly doesn’t usually help due to being outdated answers or just bad advice from bad sellers).

There was a link posted here to the ebay forums regarding the seller update. I clicked it and entered the world of the never happy, never satisfied ebay community members. Wow…
You’d definitely be well served avoiding them.
