Hi All, I sold a CD/Cassette combo in orig package for about $300 bucks. Quite a gem, worked well (tape and cd), and I sold it. Person messaged me, said they were returning it because the cassette was broken. This definitley wasn’t the case when I sent it. They returned it outside of ebay’s return system, they paid for the return (only silver lining here), then when I got it back, it was messed up. I gave them a partial refund of 250 because they used the item and returned it screwed up–one of the more egregious abuses I’ve seen. They sent a nasty gram due to the partial refund and opened a return case for the remaining $. They said they’d file a case with their credit card company (even gave me deadlines about when I had to do what). I contacted ebay, they are doing nothing until the 3 days is up on the return case. I have a feeling I am going to get screwed here. Anyone have any ideas on how to handle?

You got bad advice from ebay and you should probably call back. If you don’t respond within 3 days, ebay automatically fully refunds the buyer.
If you do respond with a message only…ebay still refunds the buyer in full.
You have to either accept the return, or give a refund in the case of an INAD.
What did ebay say when you told them the buyer returned the item outside of the ebay return process?

Yeah, the mistake was giving a refund outside of the return process. If a buyer chooses to not use an eBay label, that’s their mistake since it cannot be tracked.
So in this case, since the buyer has now officially opened a return case, tell them to mail it back. They no longer have the item so wont be able to. If they cant show the eBay system a tracking number, the case will close.

Thanks for your advice all. So to clarify, the buyer has entered a “return” for them to ship back the item (won’t happen since they already returned it). They have a couple weeks to return it. I suppose they could call ebay and provide the tracking info (which they do have). My thoughts at this point is to do nothing.
Ebay said nothing about it being sent outside of the returns process.
So, guys here is my question: If someone returns something outside of ebay’s return process, do you just wait until they open a case to give a refund? What if they never do? When do you relist?

Technically, if it is outside the return window, there is nothing you need to do on your part. However, if they were to do an INAD CC Chargeback, there would be nothing you could do as eBay does not fight these type of chargebacks for you. Essentially you would still be out the moneys.

When I receive an item back that the buyer sent outside of the ebay returns process, I inform them that in order to receive a refund, they will need to initiate a return via the ebay website, and I tell them to go to their purchase history in order to do that.

OK so do you go chasing down people who don’t communicate with you? I have had some people send a return, ask about it, and then I tell them to initiate a return and they ask how do I do that. Is it advisable to just ignore at that point? I think ebay’s return system is simple, personally.

I’ve never had a situation where someone wanted their money back but didn’t communicate with me. I guess if that happened, I might send them one extra reminder email, but that’s it. I’m not issuing a refund outside of the return process, b/c then I don’t get my fees back.
I think ebay returns are easy as well. But there are still tons of buyers out there who are not super computer literate. And they’re not using ebay every day like we are.
