hi all, its been eons since ive been on here, SL is pretty much the only podcast regarding ebay i listen to, so you have my heart always, i even bought coffee, lol – i hope you can help.
i searched the forum for “surcharge” and “hawaii” and didnt see any posts regarding the removal of the surcharge on the ebay listings. i recently had a sale from hawaii and lost $10 in the shipping due to my listings being stripped of the surcharge. from what i have read on the ebay forums, sometime around the 19th or 20th of this month February – ebay removed this option from the listing template.
i only use a predetermined flat rate for the US and a surcharge for hawaii. this is pretty serious for me if i start having sales to hawaii on my larger heavier items. do i omit shipping to hawaii now?
if i have missed any conversations, please point me in the right direction.
thanks so much!
paula

Huh. I’ve never heard of this. Hawaii is a US state so should fall under standard USPS postage.
You’re saying there’s an added $10 to ship something to Hawaii on top of the standard shipping fee? Can you share a link that explains this?I could just be ignorant.

I just went to my business policies and took a look at the one I set up for free shipping (which I am not using at the moment). I see a section “Shipping rate tables” with a button for “Apply domestic shipping rate table”. I took a look at that, and it appears to have a way to set shipping costs to different areas of the country. Perhaps that is the new function to replace what paulainmidtown has been using.
Occasionally, I will list something with free shipping. Usually, it is something that I have to ship in more than one box. Because Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, outlying territories, etc. are too expensive to include in free shipping, I’ll make it US only and exclude these areas that are too expensive to ship to. That function is below the Shipping rate tables mentioned above.

hi again,
due to the fact that ebay stripped my listings of the surcharge to hawaii that i include on all my listing – i had a sale shipping to hawaii and had to spend $10 out of pocket for the shipping. i found a screen shot but dont see how to add photo here? here is the link to the community board, if you scroll down you can see a photo with a red square around where you used to be able to add a surcharge to your ebay listing.
i have not had to do business policies, i did briefly look at these, as sharyn commented. but it looks to me that it is only a flat rate charge. this also makes no sense. if you sell larger heavier items as i do – those prices can vary greatly.
i agree with sharyn, looks like i will end up excluding those places – which to me is not a huge deal, but just is so frustrating that they make these impactful changes and make not notification to their own “customers” – we are paying them, i think its piss poor customer service….ugh – okay
im done with my rant! thanks for listening and helping. -

Why not use calculated shipping?

This would be my recommendation. Calculated shipping solves all problems.

I only use “calculated shipping” when not using “free shipping”. Learned that from SL!

I know there are plenty of people here who use calculated shipping. I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would want to weigh and measure every item when listing–especially oddly shaped items? I don’t want to package and measure a whirlpool pump prior to sale… Do most people just take a good guess, or actually weigh and measure thousands of items prior to listing?
I have a couple flat-rate tiers that I use, so the additional for Alaska/Hawaii was needed for larger items.
I was unaware and need to check this out. Just had to cancel an item for Guam because the shipping was $56. I had it listed as Fedex ground, but only USPS ships there… It would have been under $15 anywhere in conus

So I went through and played with the tables last night. The old check box was an ADDITIONAL cost, the new tables have the total cost. So I went and added $3 for west coast shipping table…and sold a number of items to California for $3 shipping including a ceiling fan. Time to go back and edit that I guess
