I’m going to teach a friend who is in a service business that keeps getting shut down. She has good taste but limited storage. I can think of the following smaller items that might be good for her to thrift: jewelry, belt buckles, scarves, trivets, unframed art, hats. She might be able to do some clothes.

I think better advice is to learn to focus on quick turnaround items.
Size is largely irrelevant if you can all but guarantee something will sell within 90 days or less.

That’s a good list. Really depends on where she likes scavenging.
Goodwill? Clothes and anything fashion related. Auctions? Jewelry, Little trinkets and vintage antiques. Estate sales? Little trinkets and vintage antiques. Yard sales? Little trinkets and vintage antiques.
The big question is if your friend has the ability to not just buy everything in sight. For sellers with limited storage, it’s about being very selective, well researched, and list things quickly so they sell quickly. Thats a big ask for a new seller when t’s so much fun to just treasure hunt:)

Other small items that I like: vintage patches (if less than $20 sales, lot them up), vintage playing cards (same, mine usually go for $15-20 with some occasional big prices), vintage ephemera of any kind (so easy to store!). But she might not be into things like that like I am.
If she already thrifts, ask her what her favorite sections are to shop in and then help her narrow in on what she can find there that would work as small and slower selling items, or large and faster turnover items. If she likes the actual hunt, she will like the selling more and be better at it.
Also, obviously teach her look for things at thrift stores that are new with a UPC code whether big or small. Easy to start listing for a newbie, usually faster sellers, especially if you price just under going sale prices. Just remind her to check for damage, it is actually sealed, etc. Like Retro says if it goes fast, size isn’t as big of a deal. I pick up weird stuff like a new sealed swimming pool filter (which I could care less about and normally never look for) for $2.99 and it’ll sell quick for $19.99 and it took me only 5 minutes to list.

Her best bet here is thrifts. Most are open 25% capacity and she can go weekdays at odd hours. Actions are limited here and I don’t think many people are having yard sales even though we have good weather. The estate sales are expensive here generally speaking and there are fewer than normal plus a regular set of people go to those. She might potentially have some very wealthy clients who donate unwanted items to her if she mentions it during their massage.
She’s a cool, pragmatic and stylish lady originally from Holland. She’s not a thrifter but not above it. I think she would have very good self control buying-wise.
For those who do costume jewelry, is the market just flooded with that stuff, vintage and otherwise?

Definitely scarves but also wallets. So easy to list and ship. A niche I’ve been getting into is vintage sewing patterns. Some aren’t worth much but vintage costume patterns are great. Gunne Sax sewing patterns too. Oh and vintage fabric but that one is tricky because you have to know how to describe feel and weight if there is no brand..

I am selling sealed VHS tapes, particularly the horror genre. Trucker snapback caps are perennial quick sellers. I do well the last day of estate sales for cheap prices, not everything goes the first day! Oh, and vintage theme park maps and brochures are popular, I have sold Opryland, Disneyland and Six Flags maps for good money.
I personally avoid costume jewelry as the market is vicious with knowledgeable buyers. If you find good stuff it sells quick, but it is too tedious for me to go through piles to find the good stuff.
