I’m not a fashionista by any stretch of the imagination, so no, I’m not going to be bidding. But I thought this was pretty interesting and I wonder to what extent ebay worked with Red Wing on this, or did Red Wing just do this on their own. I’ve often toyed with the idea of trying to assemble some ebay sellers to put together a really nice auction catalog—something like the Red Wing Auction Catalog here—of better stuff, maybe themed (really good vintage Holiday stuff, for example), and then promote the heck out of it on Social Media. Could probably donate a percentage to a Non-profit of some sort. Anyway, I thought this was interesting:

Hmmm, looking at some of the actual listings, I doubt ebay was involved. It will be interesting to see how this works out…..

I love Red Wing shoes/boots. Own several pairs myself.
But I dont see any clothes on their listing. Just boots: https://www.ebay.com/str/redwingheritage1905
Am I missing something?

It seems to be simply a marketing gimmick by Red Wing for their new boots eBay store. It’s a bit bizarre. I can hear the marketing department youngsters trying to explain it at a board meeting. “Buyers on eBay are a bit off so they’ll really like this!” and the old management codgers are like “Well, ok, I don’t get it but whatever you say.”

Jay, No, you are right, just boots. The connection with the clothing is that Red Wing will be donating the sale proceeds to the Taiwanese Laundry’s non-profit, and that Red Wing was inspired to dig this stuff out of storage just as the Laundry dug old clothing out of its storage…clothing that was never picked up by its customers.
Temudgin is right, of course, it is a marketing gimmick, but it fits in with current trends: Red Wing is using the “Instagram celebrity” status of the laundry to boost its own profile as a supporter of “Circular fashion” (which is what us less trendy folks call “used clothing”), and its curated auction of rare Red Wings is the work boot version of ebay’s special auctions for sneakerheads.

Oh, so this Taiwan laundry nonprofit is for real? The photos of the owners were kind of over the top so I thought it was a Bartles and Jaymes scenario with a fictional backstory and actors in the photos.

That bit about unclaimed laundry reminds me- yer TSA makes $500,000 a year out of unclaimed coins from the check-in trays. It’s listed in their accounts as ‘Loose Change’.

There’s an auction house in my region that sells TSA confiscated items from the DC metro area: https://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa=Main.AdvSearchResultsNew&searchType=AdvSearchResultsNew&sortoption=ea&inv_num=&category=00&kWord=&kWordSelect=2&sortBy=ad&agency=3553&state=&country=&locID=10852&timing=bySimple&locationType=state&timeType=&timingWithin=1
Lots of pocket knives 🙂
