Hey y’all
With all the changes re: returns (I don’t offer free returns), I have one that just came up and need some advice:
Buyer purchases NWT size labeled size 26 shorts ($30 + shipping)
Buyer opens a return: “Hi! I would like to return these because they are mislabeled. They are labeled as a 26 but should be closer to a 30 or 32.”
In the past I’d call ebay; they’d see it not as a defect, buyer’s remorse or buyer not wanting to pay the 20% restock or return label.
I’m not certain now with all the changes how to handle this one.
Any advice is appreciated. -

My first inclination is to say simply accept the return but have the buyer pay for the return label and simply say that the size identified in the listing is accurate to that given by the manufacturer on the label/tags. Then ask them to put the item back into the envelope or box you sent it in, seal the package, purchase a return label, and mail it back.
In my opionion, the buyer’s disagreement is with the manufacturer and not with you as a seller. If you put the exact numbers from the label in your listing, you did your job. You had nothing to do with what size the manufacturer decided to put on the label. It is his opinion that the manufacturer should have labeled the pants differently. Opinion is not fact.
Here is the official eBay return policy as of this moment in time

This is just my opinion. Other sellers may have a different opinion.

Hi, thanks for your help. When you say ‘accept the return’ do you mean accept the return through eBay, or just write the buyer a message addressing the issue. If I accept through eBay, I accept the reason the buyer chose for the return, which I don’t agree with. This is where it gets confusing.

Since you have today, I would offer that you allow time for other sellers to respond.
I am thinking that since he sent you a message and returns are allowed via messages, you do it through messaging and ask him to get a tracking number when he buys the return label.
Other more experienced sellers may have a different perspective.

Hopefully others sellers in here will be able to give some guidance based on how they handle such returns.

You haven’t clarified if this is an INAD return or a regular return request. If it is a regular return, just accept it. The buyer has to pay for shipping and you don’t refund original shipping.
Did you include actual waist measurements in your listing? If you did, it will be clear if they really are 30-32″ waist. If not, check them when you get it back. In my experience most of my customers with issues are honest. It is the rare exception when someone tries to pull a fast one with a return.

INAD as explained above

I would agree with Retro. Did you measure the waist and provide that measurement? If so, and there is this discrepancy, I would have noted that in the listing (this happens about 5% of the time).
If you don’t have the measurements, I would just accept the return and move forward. At that point, it is you vs. them. Hurts a bit, but just move on.
If you have the measurements, I would contact eBay and ask if this can be changed from INAD.

If it’s an INAD case you are hosed. I recently dealt with an INAD where the buyer said I didn’t have the info that the jeans were a 6 “short”. My listing had a large clear photo of the actual label along with the actual measurements. Didn’t matter. Ebay does not care. There is no appeal system anymore. They will tell you that you have to close out the return in order to appeal the return reason. Then the appeals department will tell you by closing the return you are no longer eligible to appeal. Nice!!
I don’t like telling people to bend over and take it, but in this case you will be a lot happier and able to move forward if you just accept, refund, relist, and let it go. Double check the actual measurements before relisting and adjust description as necessary.
I’m still pissed off with ebay over my last INAD appeal attempt. It’s totally nonproductive and has affected my ability to get back in the groove with ebay. I wish I would have taken my own advice, but I just had to test out the new, unofficial, undocumented ebay “faux appeal” system.

This is where those with the title of Top Rated Seller and Top Rated Seller Plus need to step in as a collective and let ebay know that the way they are handling INAD protects only them and not sellers and that sellers are not okay with it. Those with top stores and top level status have a strong voice with ebay.Maybe when sellers who bring in substantial amounts for ebay go to other platforms, ebay will start listening.

I think we do need to add a percentage or dollar amount onto each item across the board in order to protect ourselves financially. So, if on 10 items you add $1 dollar or $1.50, you have added $10 dollars overall. If only 1 item in the 10 gets returned and the return is under $10, you are covered for the return shipping amount. Personally, I see the return rate increasing as Free Returns goes into full swing.

Between ‘Promoted Listings’ and ‘Sale 15% off’, eventually that $1 becomes nominal in the big picture. It would never offset the $ from restocking fees and never refunding original shipping (unless inad, of course, which is much less often than a regular return, thankfully).
Thanks for everyone’s input… I have messaged the buyer. I will give her a couple of days, then just put the return through. Bullocks.
