I listed this item as “Raychem 250 ft. Self Regulating Heating Cable, 240V, H622250” but in the description section I went into more detail with this, “Raychem pipe freeze protection and roof and gutter de-icing cables. Some of it has been used but there is still quite a lot left in this box”. I also included many photos showing that it is NOT a full box.
The buyer bought it – and is now outraged that it is not a full package. They have put in the appeals and eBay has sent them shipping labels and they are supposed to ship them back – and after that ebay is taking the $500 out of my account.
I scanned the box with the Ebay app and that is how I got the title – and I know I should’ve been a little more detailed in the title in hindsight. But, Ebay is not being AT ALL supportive of me as the seller. It seems that they are more interested in the buyer now.
We shall see if the buyer actually sends back the boxes. As of now, I think I may be leaving Ebay because of this.

Lesson is that anytime you sell anything, don’t include a measurement that isn’t what is in the product. For something like this, I would have left out the 250ft in the title, made note in the condition that it isn’t 250ft, and estimated how much was left (something like 150+ feet left).
I learned the hard way as well in the past (I sold a used bottle of high-end perfume with the original volume in the title and said “50%+ full”). If something is partially used, never use the original amount in the title. It sucks, but you’ll never make the mistake again. $500 is a very hard hit though. I feel for you!

I feel you. We mentioned on the podcast that we sold a $450 chair to someone on eBay. He came and picked it up in person. When he got home, he opened an INAD case saying we didn’t disclose some wear. eBay said we had to take the return even though he had inspected it. Nothing e could do. After he dropped it off, we gave him a full refund.
In this case, I dont think you make a mistake, but we would have done it a little differently.
–Your title said it was 250 ft, but if it was partially used,, the this is incorrect info. If I was searching for this product, your title is the exact same as a new product.–We would have not put the length in the title, but instead said “Partially used”. This is like selling an item that doesnt work and putting “FOR PARTS”. The buyer should immediately know they are not getting a full roll just by reading the title.
–It’s fine to add more detail in the Description, but its well known now that eBay does not consider that a cover for something that has issues. They will only back the seller if its in the title. I know its tough to measure a partial roll like this, but who knows if 10′ was removed or 100′.
–You sold it for only $500 when a full roll goes for $1200-$2000. I bet this buyer got a deal. If you’re willing to discount so deeply, it makes sense to disclose all issues in the title. The good price will not scare people away.
TL;DR: Don’t quit eBay over this. Accept the return, relist with full disclosure in the title, and you’ll resell it immediately.

i know it sounds weird, but ebay really only considers title and item specifics and “Condition description” to back you up these days. unfortunately people don’t read the text description anymore, and ebay does a great job of hiding it anyway. people mostly don’t look past photo #1 either. some do, most don’t.
we get questions all the time about info that is clearly in the listing, photos and text, sometimes even in the title!
good news is, if this guy returns it, you can change the listing and sell it again to someone who only needs that much.

p.s. we feel you on a $500 return. it sucks to have to refund that much. just had a $550 unpaid item and we refunded that $400 LOCAL PICKUP! chair. boo! but also potentially just sold (she hasn’t paid yet) a $1000 painting yesterday, so things turn around in just a week sometimes. that’s ebay.
