It’s not latch hook. I don’t think I could get away with calling it Crewel.

Unpon closer inspection, it may be a 70’s plush carpet collage. But again I ask, was this ever a thing? How to describe?

It might be a latch hook rug.

Interesting one, debitsandcredits. What is it about this item that makes you say that it is NOT latch hook? Like Sharyn, that’s what it looks like to me.
I have also heard of something called “punch hook” rugs, but I’m not sure if this is what you have

Yeah, definitely don’t call it crewel.
I would call it a “vintage owl rug wall hanging”
I might even put “latch hook?” in the title – even though some consider that to be keyword spamming since it’s not latch hook. -

debitsandcredits, that is hand hooked yarn art on burlap. I cannot tell if the yarn is cut. By that I mean there are a few ways to hook a rug. If the yarn is cut, it is latch hooked. If the yarn is not cut, it is punched yarn. To latch a rug, you would use a latch and about a 4″ piece of yarn. In kits, the yarn is pre-cut, and colors are sorted. This is likely not from a kit and is one of a kind. If the yarn is acrylic (it looks to me, to be acrylic), it would be less expensive than say a wool yarn piece.

@Sonia – I don’t think it’s a latch hook rug because the fibers are not individually looped into the burlap.
Upon closer inspection it looks at though this is yarn but actually carpet samples cut and pasted onto the burlap.
I am not familiar with punch needle work, so I will follow some of @daisy’s links before I list.

I have what I think is a similar piece. It’s like pieces of carpet that have been glued on to a backer of burlap, so the area under the “carpet” is stiff. Then this whole assembly has been glued onto another larger piece of burlap, forming a design, with a yarn outline glued around it. Is that what you have?
I say carpet because it looks to me like the fibers are twisted like they would be in carpet, not loops like you would expect with latch hook or punch needle.
I’ve done punch needle before and I wouldn’t describe this as that. And it doesn’t look like latch hook, either. But I can’t help you with a name beyond that, unfortunately. I decided I liked mine and also didn’t want to deal with shipping it as it’s rather long and somewhat fragile, so it’s hanging in my office. That got me out of figuring out what to call it.

debitsandcredits, here are a few links from etsy sellers. These look similar to the style of art you have. If you could show the backside, it may be helpful. The sellers here just have the solid burlap, but if you are saying it is rug pieces put together, then it is more likely an “assemblage art” wallhanging tapestry. Here are some keywords you can use in your listing: tapestry, wallhanging, textile art and lastly, assemblage art. For “assemblage art” I would only use that term if it is rug pieces glue, sewn, or otherwise cut and “assembled” on the burlap. If the yarn is hooked, or punched into the burlap, then don’t use the word “assemblage”. No matter what it is, “textile art” is appropriate. Good luck!

The piece is mounted to a board, a picture of the back would not be helpful. Another argument against latch hook, is that the design is pretty flush to the solid board, If there were looped yarn behind the burlap it you would be able to feel it. I am going with Textile art
Thanks all
