Anyone using this?
I think it makes everything kind of antiseptic, no warmth, to much like a retail website photo.
I like a plain background but this too much.
Maybe it would work for new items. -

I accidentally ran into this feature a few days ago. Whatever photo I was looking at had two items. It automatically whited out the background except for the area in between the two things. When I tried fixing it manually, some parts of the item were whited out. So, it didn’t work properly for whatever I was listing at the moment. Maybe there’s a zoom feature that would help? I haven’t tried it again.
Sometimes I use white poster board for the background, which gets dirty especially when I’m photographing old dusty items (even if I dusted them off). I can see this feature being useful because I push to use the poster board for as long as I can.
Maybe also when I photograph larger items in my hallway. I wouldn’t mind getting rid of the doorway or outlet when I absolutely can’t take the photo without them in there.
Otherwise, I see no reason to get rid of a nice wood floor or black background. I’ll have to try it a few more times

I’ve used it. Not a great tool, but handy in a pinch.
Here’s a listing I pretty much had to use it on due to the size of the set:

It looks like another way Ebay’s copying Amazon.
Amazon’s photo policy:
“Image standards
Images must accurately represent the product and show only the product that is for sale, with minimal or no propping.
Main images must have a pure white background (pure white blends in with the Amazon search and item detail pages-RGB values of 255,255,255).
Main images must show the actual product (not a graphic or illustration), and must NOT show excluded accessories, props that may confuse the customer, text that is not part of the product, or logos/watermarks/inset images.
The product must fill 85% or more of the image.
Images should be 1,000 pixels or larger in either height or width. This minimum size requirement enables zoom function on the website. Zoom has proven to enhance sales. The smallest your file can be is 500 pixels on the longest side. Consistently sized images are strongly recommended.
Amazon accepts JPEG (.jpg), TIFF (.tif), or GIF (.gif) file formats (JPEG is preferred). That being said, I’m really hoping that having a white background does not become required for all photos on Ebay. I don’t have the time to adjust all of my photos manually or with this tool.

This is not going to look good in a listing then! Guess I’ll have to put it back on the wall.

almasty,
I definitely don’t see ebay requiring this for all sellers/all listings. eBay does recommend using an all white background for at least the Gallery Photo, in part because Google seems to prefer it. However, I think eBay recognizes that it is probably most useful for “new” items, probably because buyers are used to such items having an all white background. A while ago, while still saying that the Gallery is best as white, eBay acknowledged that many items (especially vintage, etc) can look better if they are staged somewhat (as long as the photo isn’t “cluttered”. So, yes, an old stoneware crock might sell better if it’s on a weathered pine table rather than an antiseptic white background.
I think the tool is simply aimed at making it easier for those sellers who really want the all white background to get it. When eBay first started recommending white backgrounds, a lot of sellers said “Well, if you want it so badly, why don’t you make it easier for us to provide it.” and that’s what they’ve done. Unfortunately, pretty sure it won’t work on my older model phone, or I’d at least play around with it.
