I found this large needlepoint piece at a thrift store. The design is completed but the background is not. I have never done needlepoint and am not familiar with whether the background is usually / always filled in. Or is it sometimes just left as the plain canvas? Is the piece partially completed? Is it what they call a pre-worked piece?
Also to the side of the design are what I think are Chinese characters. I was wondering if anyone can translate them for me.
Thanks in advance for any help

It looks like a cross stitch piece. Probably from a kit. And yes, it’s very common to stitch only the design and not the full background. The Chinese characters are probably the name or initials of the person who did the work (guessing). It helps to also photograph and show the back of the piece. How neat and tidy the worker kept the threads on the back will speak highly/poorly of their ability. It also helps to grab a close up of the stitches themselves with the fabric in it. Most kits are stitched on 14 count Aida; they are not as desirable as works stitched on higher count linen.
It’s typically called “Finished” or “Completed” at this stage, but not an “FFO” or Final Finish Object as in framed.

It’s not cross stitch. That’s one thing I’m sure of since I used to do cross stitch. Here is a closer view of the stitches. From the google images I’ve looked at I thought it was needlepoint and most of those have the backgrounds filled in. That’s why I wonder if this is complete or not

It could be embroidery especially if it is on a fabric type material.
I’ve had needlepoint where only the design was done and not the background.

It’s my understanding that this is how the pieces were originally sold. Someone did the harder/intricate work and the person who bought it filled in the background color. This allowed you to personalize the piece to fit your decor without putting the time/skill into doing the more challenging design.

Third character down (right hand side) is ‘woman’

I have found pieces similar to yours in the past (I think they were Bucilla brand) that had the design pre-worked at the factory as antarestar says above. Mine had the label still attached and they were for chair seats. You were to fill in the background color yourself to suit your decor as antarestar said. Mine were needlepoint and they were vintage. I can’t remember the date was on the label but they were way more than 20 years old. What is the measurement of the piece overall? Perhaps it is also meant for a chair seat cover or (if larger) a bench seat cover…

Vintage Treasures The canvas is 43 x 22″. Maybe like you said for a bench?
Thanks everyone for your tips.
I listed it at 49.99. Maybe too high but I really have no idea so I thought I’d just see what kind of interest.

Nancy I would guess that size might be about right for a piano bench. Back in the day some pianos had bench style seats with cushioned tops that opened so you could store your piano music in the seat. (Not sure if they still have that type of piano bench.) So this could be a piece meant to cover that.
I didn’t sell my canvases for nearly as much as yours but mine were for chair seats and backs. At the time I listed those it looked like the sets of 4 or more of the same design were going for good $. Unfortunately I just had a few random ones. Good luck!
