So two weeks back I was at a local auction and I bought for $25 a box lot of vintage pottery. I was interested in a few specific things so I was happy to win it all, but also there was a covered vegetable dish by Edwin M Knowles, Yorktown shape with no chips or cracks. The markings on the bottom give the manufacture date of 1937 and doing some looking I found this auction of a teapot that had the same pattern (but they don’t name the pattern either):
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Edwin-M-Knowles-Yorktown-Teapot-Coffee-Pot/142725577728?
Wow, what a price! Is this because of the shape (teapot) or the pattern itself or both? Could my vegetable dish be that valuable? I saw a few other items with that pattern on Worthpoint but I don’t have a subscription. I also don’t have a Knowles pattern book, but I did try to do some online sleuthing but came up short. Any help is appreciated and of course pricing guidance. Would this be a rare time to use an auction? I’m a BIN kinda guy usually. Thanks in advance!

Mickdog,
It may help if you include a picture.-

The auction I linked to has the pattern in question, but I’ll try to take and add one in from my item in a minute.

Here is the link of my item specifically:

mickdog,
It is possible that that may be a sugar or serving bowl. I have learned that different pieces can go for different amounts.
This link may be of benefit.

Hi, thanks for helping out! I’m pretty sure it is a covered serving dish (I call them vegetable dishes) based on size which is 8″ in diameter. The main thing I’m trying to figure out is the pattern (the picture) on the side. It seems rare after doing a deep google/ebay search; I’ve only found a few items and some are behind a paywall.
Here is an example: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/edwin-knowles-china-plate-yorktown-shape
This listing also does not have a pattern name in this description, and I can’t see what it sold for.
Another one: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/yorktown-shape-pantry-shelf-teapot-457717841
This one calls it “pantry shelf”, but ebay searching for that and Edwin Knowles only brings up the teapot that sold in my original post. I don’t think that is the name of the pattern.
I’m hoping someone knows the pattern and can help, or if someone with worthpoint can dig into those two above for me I’d be appreciative.

I am having trouble editing the one above, so I am putting an update here.

What’s interesting is that if you looking at solds for “Edwin M Knowles Yorktown”:
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313.TR1.TRC0.A0.H0.XEdwin++Knowles+yorrktown.TRS0.TSS0&_nkw=Edwin++Knowles+yorrktown&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_sop=16&_odkw=edwin+knowles+yorktown&_osacat=0&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1That one teapot sold for $338, but then prices immediately drop off.
So I dont know if that specific pattern is ought after, or it’s an example of one of those rare auctions where you got two motivated buyers fighting over the price.

Exactly Jay. Normally I’d never post about one of these, I’d just use ebay for pricing guidance and list accordingly. But that one high price teapot, with my same pattern, got me wondering though. I’ll do some more research and maybe try an auction this time just in case.

You know we hate auctions, but this might be the good edge case where doing an auction could bring a good price. Maybe the buyer who missed that sale will snatch it up.

After many pages of searching, I did find this pattern on replacements.com
https://www.replacements.com/webquote/knokno817.htm
It appears they don’t have an exact name either but call it Dishes on Shelf in the description, so maybe “Dishes” is the pattern name. They also don’t have any price history and appear to only have sold a couple items.

They have a code, but this could be internal: KNO817
You could use it in case someone on eBay is searching for something on Replacements.com.We would put it up high and add “make offer”. See what happens. Other sellers here would say put it on auction and see what happens.
Pick your poison.

Replying to this as an update. Jay, I set the price high at $299 with make offer. About a month ago I got and offer for $100, which I countered at $200 and was prepared to meet in the middle at $150. Unfortunately he never replied back and the offer expired.
So the good thing about this is lack of sale is that it does show that this pattern must be rarer and have higher value like I thought, and it also set a floor for future offers. I’d still like to get $150 or more, but I might not say no to the next reasonable offer of $100+.

Cool. We find that pottery and china can bring great prices, but it takes time to wait for the right person.
