Remember the old motto: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds”?
Today I worked frantically to get all my orders packed and delivered to the Post Office (no pick up in my rural area) as it’s an 8-mile drive over multiple low water crossings and we’re on a Flood Alert for the next 24 hours. It’s been one of my major “natural hazards” to getting my shipping out on time, and about twice a year it’s an issue. I’ve spent 10 hours trapped between rivers, watching the water wash over my tires, and it’s not an experience I’d suggest anyone put on their bucket list!
The folks in Tulsa today have it worse than me, with the tornado last night. Are there any Tulsa Elves here? My heart goes out to you.
What “natural hazards” do you have to deal with? Offhand I can think of blizzards, earthquakes, tornadoes and flooding. Any funny stories about your battling with any of them to get your parcels in the post?

When we used to drive our packages to then post office each day, snow was the one hazard we had to deal with.

Does your post person pick up your packages in any weather?

Yep, she picks up in almost any weather condition. Deep snow or think ice are only times she doesn’t come. Very very rare. What they say about the Postal System is true.

How do you get US mail in your rural area? It must get delivered somehow?

We are on a rural delivery route, too. Our mail is delivered to a cluster box down the road, like at an apartment. They don’t do package pickup for us. Sometimes the carrier is nice and will drop off a package at my house, rather than make me go to the post office for pickup, since I’m only 1/4 mile from the cluster box.

We have a row of post boxes on the main highway, about two miles from our house. FedEx and UPS will deliver/pick up at the house, but USPS flat won’t. As the boxes are on the main highway with no locking mechanisms, I won’t leave anything in mine for collection. So, I have to drive the two miles on dirt road to the main road, over 3 low water crossings, then 8 miles to the Post Office over several crossings and a couple bridges.
Floods are a known issue in our area, an annual occurrence. We tend to make provisions like stocking emergency food, water, and fuel, but we don’t do much else, as they have to in tornado/hurricane areas of Texas, or for severe blizzards and stuff like you folk up north.

This is probably the one subject area where I should NOT be posting!
We moved to our current house in a suburban town (East Brunswick, NJ) in 2005. I had a long commute, and I saved about 10 min off my drive after the move. We also liked the fact that there were two day care centers around the corner and a small shopping center with a pizza place just a little further. The fact that the post office was right next to the day care center we picked wasn’t too big of a deal.
Now our kids are teenagers, and the day care centers aren’t a factor any more. The post office, however, is a 0.7 mile drive from our home (I know because I measured it with the car odometer for tax purposes). I could walk there, but it is on a busier street with no sidewalks, so I drive (usually on my way to do some other type of errand).
We selected our house partly based on its location; however, some of the benefits were not so apparent at that time. I had no idea I would start this business about a year and a half ago and that the location of the PO would be so convenient for me!

I envy your close post office! When I lived in the Chicago suburbs, I could walk to the post office nearest me. I’d put my son in his stroller, put the packages in the basket underneath, and we’d have a nice walk. Now, we’re are 9 miles from town, so no way we can walk that every day! 🙂
