I’ve been selling on Ebay for 10 years and this is the first time that I’ve had this refund issue! I sold a vintage electronic Spanish-English translator. I tested it and it was working before I shipped it. The buyer opened a return request saying that it’s not working. It was a low price item and I didn’t want to pay for return shipping so I just provided a full refund. Then the buyer messaged me an hour after receiving the refund saying that the translator is now working and that he would like to cancel the refund and give me my money back. I don’t think there’s any way to reverse the refund in Ebay so I gave him my paypal email address and told him he can pay for the item through paypal. Now he’s ghosted me and he has a working translator for free. I called Ebay to see if there’s any way to reverse the refund case and get back my payment for the item and the Ebay rep basically said there’s no way and there’s nothing that I can do other than hope that the buyer will eventually pay for the item through Paypal. I guess to prevent this from happening again I will need to have the buyer ship the item back if they want a refund.

I just want to add that the buyer clearly states in his message through Ebay to me that the translator is working, that he’d like to reverse the refund and pay me for the item. I feel like the Ebay rep should have the capability to cancel or reverse the refund after reading the buyer’s messages to me but the Ebay rep says that he doesn’t!

Yeah, once you give a refund, the horse has left the barn. No way to claw back a refund if you willingly gave it.
to be fair, if this was a low dollar item, I think you did the correct thing. Small amount of loss for no headache.
But any item over $20, we always make people return the item before we give a refund UNLESS we see we were clearly in the wrong (bad packing, something we missed).

I had something like that happen recently. Low dollar item, it’s marked delivered, customer says it’s not at her house. I refunded her and figured I would get my $16 from the post office. Later that day it shows up.
Customer asked if she could give me my money back but I told her to consider it a gift.

Just so other know, sellers are not required by ebay or Paypal to refund buyers if the tracking shows delivered. Buyers can complain but their cases will go in the seller’s favor.

WBird is correct. If an item shows delivered you don’t need to refund the buyer at all.
I had the same issue, a buyer claimed that the item which scanned as delivered was not delivered to her. I did everything I could to help: I suggested she ask her postal carrier about the item, call her local post office regarding the problem, ask her neighbors if it had been misdelivered, post a sign in her apartment lobby asking about the item, etc. She had said that she lived in a large apartment building and mail was often placed in the wrong mailboxes.
Anyway, she got really nasty about it and accused me of calling her a liar, demanded her $ back and then left negative feedback when I didn’t refund her. EBay removed the negative feedback because the item was scanned as delivered. EBay will always remove feedback if it’s about an item not being delivered that has been scanned as delivered.
