Any industrial geeks out there?
How might you describe this thing? It came off a wheel that belongs to a vintage/old band saw..
Any input would be appreciated.

It looks like a bushing for holding a roller bearing. Normally though there would be bolt holes in the base to mount it / hold it in place.

Thank you, Steve. I looked it up and you might be right in using the term “bushing”
The silver piece with the hole (the “bushing”) was attached to this band saw wheel (see below). I had it sawed off because it was too hard to remove but the post on the back end was inside the hole.

If it contained bearings, it might be a “pillow block”. It’s hard to know the right term not knowing the particular saw.

Thank you that is very helpful. I can see what you mean when I google pillow block. I will put both the key words in the listing and see what happens!

Where did that big piece of industrial metal come from?

Jay, it came from a band saw that I never saw. The silver piece was attached to the wheel. I had it removed by cutting it off. The guy that sold it to me told me it was from a band saw, otherwise I would not have known.

I guess I may be misunderstanding. If you cut off this piece from its original application, what is it’s value now? Just a decoration or is it still usable somehow?

Jay, I totally get what you mean. What I was trying to do is find a name for this thingamajig. I did not know what to put in the title. I figured someone might know what this type of piece would be called so I could at the very least say it in the listing. I assume it is not useful for its original purpose at this point.
In the end I titled my listing: “Industrial Metal Machine Parts Steampunk Art Industrial Decor Repurpose.” And I put Bushing and Pillow Block in the item specifics.
I am going with the Ryanne method of listing all the little bits and pieces and crossing my fingers that this works!

Understood. Its a dilemma whether to use your title characters to describe its original use or to describe its current abstract art value. Neat idea though. There are people who may want a big chunk of metal on a mantle as an art piece.

I wonder if that band saw was powered by a hit and miss engine. The metal wheel looks similar to a flywheel off of one: Hit and Miss Engine at Google Images

Might be. There are three wheels all together. I don’t know if one was extra or if all three were in use.

While most band saws use only two wheels, there are indeed 3-wheeled models. The third wheel moves the part of the blade over to give the saw a deeper “throat” (more distance between the cutting part of the blade and the column that supports the upper wheel and guides).
