I don’t think I had ever lost a chargeback case with Paypal but just received the first INAD on eBay’s Mangled Payments and have lost it. Item sent was new, even had an invoice from wholesale to prove it, but buyer’s institution sided with the buyer (not surprisingly). So I am not only out the money, but also the item as buyer never opened return or anything, went straight to a chargeback. I am also out eBay’s $20 fee. So, essentially, if buyer does an INAD chargeback with their banking institution, Ebay sellers have no recourse or protection.

This is concerning. Have you called eBay? I would hope it would fall under either eBay or Paypal’s “seller protection”.
We also have an item that was never returned, but the buyer opened a chargeback case through the credit card. Other than proving that we delivered it and are willing to take a return, we feel helpless.

Jay, yes, I called eBay and they mentioned that this was opened with buyer’s financial institution and they had nothing to do with it, and there was not much they could do. I think you should be fine if buyer opened the chargeback for “item not received”, however, if it was opened for “item not as described” I hope you have a better outcome than myself.

Just curious: couldnt a buyer also open a chargeback before Managed Payments? Byers wold pay with a CC through Paypal. Were there better protections before hand?
I feel this is rare occurrence. Very much sucks, but I dont forsee a future pf chargebacks.

INAD Chargebacks with Paypal forced the buyers to return the items for a refund at their own expense. Most never did. But with eBay, it seems they simply issue a refund to buyer not caring if they sent the item back.

I have had two chargebacks under Managed Payments. The first was a midcentury Danish salad bowl. No contact from buyer, just a chargeback through their financial institution claiming not as described. I have called ebay three times trying to defend myself, but they can’t even tell me what the buyer claims is wrong. I have no opportunity to upload supporting documents. They can’t even tell me what ebay replied to the institution. This case is still pending.
The second case was a can of Pledge with a discontinued scent. They went straight through their institution with no contact and no description of what is wrong. In this case I was given an opportunity to upload supporting documents. It required a PNG file so I created a PNG document saying item was as described, tracking shows delivered, I offer 30 day returns, I’ve had no contact from buyer and it appears buyer is trying to keep their money and the item. This case was decided in my favor.
Before managed payments I had maybe one chargeback every other year. I’ve had two since Managed Payments began for me on 7/31/20. I hope this is a coincidence and not going to be a pattern.

UPDATE. The Danish salad bowl was closed in the buyer’s favor, but ebay said I was covered by seller protection. I was never told the reason for the chargeback, but at least I’m covered.

WBird, to be covered by Seller Protection in this case, did you have to offer free return shipping to qualify? I’m becoming concerned that these types of returns will increase in frequency once unscrupulous buyers find out how simple it is. I want to make sure I qualify for whatever the seller protection is.

Julie, I do not offer free returns. I never had any messages or return request from the buyer. The case info said Ebay replied to the financial institution on my behalf, but no one was able to tell me the content of the complaint or how I was defended. I was not allowed to upload documents. I assume the tracking showing it was delivered was my defense. I’m just glad it worked out for me.

Thanks for the response. That is a relief and I’m glad it worked out!

Just got a chargeback under managed payments, again. This one is for a Verona Collection Figurine that arrived damaged to the buyer. The buyer opened a return, which I accepted and provided a shipping label. Buyer never sent the item back and a day before the return closing automatically, the buyer opened an INAD dispute. I called Managed Payments and the rep pretty much told me I was out of luck. He said the financial institution will most likely side with the buyer and I will have to eat the cost. Now, the reason I want it back is because I opened an insurance claim with USPS and they are requesting to take the item to the post office for inspection. I obviously can’t do that if I don’t have the item back. I fear this may be recurring theme with chargebacks on Ebay. I never had any issues with Paypal at all. I don’t think I ever lost a case there. Now I’m going for my second chargeback case lost.

I got a dispute yesterday on a pair of jeans. They were only shipped YESTERDAY! And yesterday the buyer put in a claim for item not received. eBay put my funds on hold. I emailed the buyer who said they’d canceled the dispute, but eBay still has me on hold, so I’m not sure if I’m being scammed.

I think you will be fine. I think INR cases are covered through eBay. I think only the INAD cases have no seller protection.
