Was going through a small death pile (not the only death pile I have) and came across some costume jewelry I have been storing. When I decided to look through it, I realized a few things have “gone bad”. By that I mean, I have stored any small jewelry pieces in small, clear, plastic containers with compartments. The jewelry has been stored for a few years there. When I rummaged through the containers, some of the jewelry had “faded”. I had a pair of earrings that I found at a thrift store a few years back. They were pink button type clip on earrings. I bought them because I had an exact pair in high school and really liked them. They were pink with glitter like confetti. They are now a “vomity” (sorry for the graphic language) shade of orangey color. Also, I had other pieces that I had the same experience with.
Too, I realized that things I’m storing in clean plastic totes, the same thing is happening too. Some plastic items are “turning”. Am I the only one? Anyone else have this happen to them? Not sure what the solution is.

This is a legitimate concern for anything that’s stored too long. Were they exposed to sunlight or some sort of higher temperature perhaps? I can see that having an effect on plastics in particular. You have the right idea to keep them stored in containers anyhow I think, as I made the mistake of leaving items on a rack without containers and we had our basement flood. Luckily a lot of the items were above the water and were perfectly fine, but our media collection in particular had all of the packaging damaged due to the increased moisture and such.
Hope you solve your issue though. Be sure to keep us posted as nobody wants to have their storage spoiled!

Just a guess- could be the same process that turns old computers “nicotine brown”. It’s something to do with a compound of bromine that was added to the plastic. Pink plus brown makes an orangey colour? Also the plastic boxes might be outgassing, like the vapour from the black plastic in cars leaves a film over the inside of the windscreen.

Yeah, there will be some items that don’t age well. Just cheap material. I know we have some of those items. Sometimes plastic/rubber items will smell bad when kept too long.
Good news is that a majority of our items have been stored in barns, closets, etc for years. That’s quality.

Yes, just recently when I was selling a pair of inline skates nearly everyday I had something like this happen.
It was two different pairs of inline skates, both Bauer with Bauer wheels. While the skates were in storage waiting to be sold, the wheels disenagrated to small pieces. I had to cancel the sale of one of them.

Goomba478, I did not have the stored items in sunlight, as the sunlight at my place is very limited.
Antique Frog, yes, I have had sewing machines that the original color was white, only to have them turn yellow on me. I’m guessing it’s the same thing with these plastic storage totes.
Mark S. Oh my goodness, that had to suck to cancel a sale due to the item disintegrating. I recently had to cancel a sale of a cookie jar that went real bad from me keeping it in the garage. It cracked while in the garage in ways I could never have imagined. I now have to stare at the thing in my kitchen every day as a reminder. Oh well. I guess it is the cost of doing business for me.
I think I’ve stated before, but I’ll say it again. I am considering just selling off what I have and work on just selling fabric. God knows I have p-lenty of fabric to keep me busy for a while.
