It really does pay to ask at garage sales for what you are looking for

Thanks to all the folks on here who have recommended asking at garage sales for what you are looking for.  I admit my style is usually more towards just assuming what is at the garage sale is what is available.  But I have been looking for more shelves and haven’t found any at good prices on nextdoor, facebook marketplace etc…  A couple weeks ago, I was at a moving sale and bought some items.  While paying, I noticed that deep inside their garage–not part of the sale–were shelves.  So I thought of the stories people had shared on here, and asked if they were planning on selling their garage shelves.   He did want to sell later at a reasonable price (not amazing but better than I’ve seen elsewhere), so he wrote down my name and number.  When we went to pick them up today, they were in the process of clearing out more stuff in preparation for the move so they were happy to give me a few bags of free stuff (they were more excited to give me this extra stuff than I was to take it, since I couldn’t really tell what all was in the bags).   Anyway, after going through the free extra stuff, it should pay for the shelves once I get it listed and sold.

About 75% of the time if I ask someone running a garage sale about old video games, they get annoyed and say I’m the 12th person to ask and NO, THEY DON’T HAVE ANY VIDEO GAMES. Then again, every so often someone will bring a tote full of old NES games up out of the basement.

Exactly why I don’t really ask. I am a late yard sale shopper. I usually don’t start until 10am so I can get the last minute deals as people are prepping to shut down.

All the video game resellers are the ones that show up at 7am and lowball the sellers.

It’s been years since I had a yard sale, but those people that show up before I’m officially open and start peppering me with requests for items like games, coins, etc. are ANNOYING!!!

 

I’ll occasionally ask if I start up a conversation or if there is evidence that there might be more. Otherwise, I just shop and move on.
