I searched the forum to see if someone else brought up this topic but didn’t find anything, so I apologize if this has already been discussed.
My hubby and I have been contemplating going to Las Vegas for eBay open. We have never been and think it might be a great experience. We are hoping to glean some tips and tricks from ebay and other sellers to help expand our business. I was thinking if anyone for the Scavenger Life forums will be going we could have a little meet up or get together.
I was also wondering if anyone has gone to ebay open in the past and what they thought of the experience.

I’ve never been to ebay open, but I think you can learn more on the forums here in terms of tips and tricks over the course of several months for free than you could at ebay open for $$$. I also never understood the whole networking aspect of it; the only people I would want to network with would be ebay themselves. If you’re guaranteed time with them to genuinely voice your suggestions & complaints, it would be totally worth it.

I disagree somewhat. While I think this forum is my number one place for positive conversation, and the podcast my favorite place to learn, I am also willing to listen and learn from others who are doing things completely different from what I am doing. Most ebayers cannot make a living doing ebay alone, most of us have different streams of income. I am hoping to hear about what other people are doing out there, things that are maybe out of my comfort zone.

If you live there, go for it.
If you want to go to Vegas anyways and are looking for an excuse to make it tax deductible, go for it.
If you are planning a major trip to go to this purely for listening, learning, and networking then save your money. There are limitless podcasts, youtube channels, and private groups that you could get plenty of help and community from.

We do live close so can get down to Vegas pretty cheaply. Heat in July down there will quite literally melt your shoes, so that is the one hindrance. lol

We went to a big eBay event in Philadelphia in 2012 or 2013. It was when eBay was doing big events. They had rows of eBay employees from different departments in front of computers that you could walk up to and ask detailed questions. It was great. It was a three hour drive and cheap motel for us so well worth it.
Not sure what eBay Open is like. As others said, if you want a fun vacation is Vegas, it’s a good excuse to go.

Right. And that’s only through the end of April I think, it goes up after that. We’ve never been, but we’re thinking of going this year.

Great idea, they should at least provide a discount. I bet you and Jay could get a free trip, I guess if ebay invites you to speak on a panel they pay for you to come out. Don’t quote me on that!:) I would love to see you two there, you really do have a different business type than most of the really popular youtube sellers. Mostly because you are transparent and truthful. You guys talk about the struggles and the rewards. Many of the youtubers (is that even a word!) just talk about how they make six figures, but then they hide their sales and stores and won’t say how they really make their money. I think Scavenger life is a unique forum/podcast too because it is positive! We can disagree and still have a constructive conversation. Many of the youtube ebayers will get rid of comments of people who disagree with them or ask questions they don’t like. While I agree there are some trolls that need to be shut down they are also deleting comments of people who follow them and by deleting the comments there is no chance for dialogue or a constructive conversation. Sorry for the rant, that has been on my mind for a while. Soooo…. if ebay invited you guys, would you go?

the last thing ebay did to acknowledge us was send a cease and desist letter when we were called eBay Scavengers, so that’s the level of relationship we seem to have with them unfortunately ; )

That was a while ago. I think Scavenger Life is more suited to you anyway.
They invite one youtube guy who talks crap about ebay constantly on his channel. He is just a negative Nelly. Lol. Just imagine, you can get some t-shirts made up with Scavenger Life on them, then whoever is going from the community can wear them too. Hehe.

Rhianna, yes we are going to eBay Open, and if any other Scavengers would like to do a meet up, I think we should do that one night.
We went last year, and we are bringing a seller friend of ours with us this year.
Lots to talk about on this topic, so I’ll give my perspective.
From a learning perspective, if you are a newer seller, you can learn from some of the workshops. For us as more advanced and experienced sellers, we really only learned some new items from one class. So if you are going to learn from the classes, I think only newer sellers would benefit (though I haven’t seen the class schedule).
The most eye-opening part (and my focus this year) was the people that we met. We met a lot of different sellers, talked about a lot of different business models, practices, tools, software, etc. Having that new perspective of how others are doing (or not doing) is great, and a must, for growing your business. I want to talk to more people, hopefully make some new contacts so that I have people that I can directly contact for questions, advice, etc.
I also really liked meeting eBay people and SixBit people personally. We partied with the SixBit group (and have beers scheduled for this year), so now when I work with them, it is a better relationship. We were able to talk with eBay folks on the Guaranteed Delivery program, got all our questions answered, and expressed our concerns and thoughts for improvement. That face-to-face is huge (business is 95% people). The large group discussions on the new tools and vision that eBay has was illuminating as well.
And…Vegas is fun. It will cost about $1,500 total for both of us, after hotel, travel, etc…but is is also a business trip, tax deductible, and we will have a good time. For us…money well spent.

I read somewhere, will try to find link to it that if you buy a ticket to ebay open you automatically get one free year of ebay’s concierge service. That alone is a big plus to me. I don’t have concierge but would love it without having to pay for an anchor store. I’m thinking about going but not super seriously…It would be nice to have a scavenger meet up though.

Nancy, The concierge thing? They did do that last year, but as far as I know, nothing has been said about doing it again this year. Would be nice though…

Oh! good to know! Thanks MyCottage. I remember now I had heard on a youtube video a person who had gone last year. She must be assuming they would do it again.

Nancy, ebay’s events director was interviewed today and said no decision had yet been made on the concierge issue. Hopefully they’ll announce a decision before the price goes up in May….

My husband and I are going. We went last year and had SO much fun. I thought it was very inspiring and fun to network with other sellers. We already have free airfare due to frequent flyer points and the rest is a business write off as my husband is my business partner in my LLC. So, yes! We’ll be there.
