I’ve heard you talk on the podcast about buying an iPhone 7 for Jay on eBay. I’m thinking of getting one and I’m wondering if you could tell me what seller you got them from in the past, or any tips you can offer, like what you look for when buying them? Should I just look for an unlocked iPhone 7? They mostly go for about $100-$125, right?

My two cents – I’d check out the 2020 version of the iPhone SE. It’s basically the iPhone 11 minus a couple camera features and smaller size with a little less battery life. I use Total wireless and got mine brand new for $250. Total wireless uses the same towers as Verizon and for my wife and I to share 12GB of data a month we pay $60.

Assume you’re on contract for a new iPhone SE for $250? Not a big deal, but I always try to avoid phone contracts. They know how to get their money!

Actually I have a no contract plan with Consumer Cellular, but they aren’t selling the iPhone 7 right now, so I was trying to find a good place to get one and use with CC.

We are also with Consumer Cellular. They also have a great deal on a new SE for $250. We bought new SEs for my husband, my son, and my daughter in the fall. I didn’t do the research on the SE camera, but they didn’t need it any extras. If the SE has what the 7+ camera has, then it could be a contender.

I actually just bought the iPhone SE from Best Buy on the internet with no contract. They had some kind of deal for total wireless specifically. It came with a prepaid card thing but I just popped the sim card I already had in it and it works fine. Looks like Target is doing the same thing. I’m not sure if you can use the total wireless phones with any other carrier sim card so that may be how they’re getting there money.

I bought a iPhone 7+ two years ago (February 2019). When I did the research, I found that Apple had been upgrading the cameras, and the 7+ had most of the new features. The iPhone X had some upgrades, but (according to the articles I read) the improvements weren’t worth the much higher cost.
One of the main upgrades was the zoom camera that allows you to go 10x. I use this ALL the time. I am very happy with the quality of the photos as well.
Note that this was for the 7+ (the plus version), not the regular 7 (without the plus). However, note that the 7+ is a larger phone.
This is the research I did at the time, so the recommendations may or may not have changed. I know that some of the newer phones also have a third camera that gives you a wide view, which is really not needed for eBay photos.
I paid $310 at the time. The price has gone down to $230. I don’t recommend getting an iPhone that has anything less than the zoom camera that the 7+ has. The seller is still using the same listing as when I bought mine. I didn’t have any issues with them:

Yeah, we each have the iPhone 7. Works well. They’re really cheap too. $100-$125 as you said.
We don’t have any specific phone seller we use. Need to buy one according to the service you use. And usually needs to be “unlocked”. There’s lot of sellers online who seem to buy old phones and fix up for sale.

Looks like you can also get the deal I was talking about with Consumer cellular:

I am of the mind that my phone is the most important piece of equipment for my ebay business so I get a new iPhone every few years, always a better camera than the last model and better security.
I’ve had an XS for a couple years now and am considering a 12. A $1000 for the core piece of my online business makes sense to me.

This makes sense. A good phone is good for business.
Im just too hard on my phones doing renovations etc. I would not feel comfortable with a $1000 phone in my pocket. I broke one already this year 🙂

I see that as well, my only field use is garage and estate sales.
