This is the first time I’ve seen this message from ebay…. It was from an item that was local pick up which he paid in cash. I guess the problem was he didn’t commit to buying it on ebay then pay in cash upon arrival. He showed up, bought it from me, and I then had to end the listing after that. They must have seen that I gave him my address through messages which apparently is also not allowed? How am I suppose to arrange local pick ups if I cannot give my address? I don’t do local pickup very often in fact I like to avoid it. So my question is what exactly am I being restricted from doing on ebay. I’m not too concerned just another lesson learned, but any feedback would be much appreciated.
Here is the message:
We reviewed your eBay account and determined that you haven’t followed our offers to buy or sell outside of eBay policy. Offers to buy or sell outside eBay, including providing contact information within a member-to-member message, are not allowed.
As a result, your eBay buying and selling account privileges have been restricted for 7 days.
Once the 7 days have passed, your account will automatically be reinstated. However, keep in mind that if you don’t follow this policy in the future, your account could be suspended.
Thanks,
eBay

yep, you sold something ‘through’ ebay but not directly and that is a violation in which they can suspend you. you basically skirted all ebay fees by ending it and not having him buy it on ebay. he could still pay cash, but ebay wants their final value fees.

what ebay wants to happen—
you list a local pickup item. person purchases it through Buy Now (or auction). person never has to pay right away through Local Pickup listings, so it remains unpaid. transaction has been started through ebay (they get their final value fees). then you arrange pick up w/ your address and phone number. buyer picks up, and has either paid you through paypal or pays in cash. you mark as “shipped” and “paid”.what you did–
buyer wants your local pick up item. you agree and give your address. you end listing and have essentially sold it offline using ebay like craigslist. they dont like it, you used ebay to advertise and sell an item and you didn’t pay them for that. -

all this being said…
you could call ebay and plead ignorance that you didn’t know how local pickup worked. which sounds like it’s true, so no fib there. just see if they can lift the suspension. -

That suspension is harsh. Surprised you didn’t get a warning first. But remember that if eBay doesn’t make money on the transaction where they connected the buyer and seller, it’d be a dumb business model for them.
When we sell “local pickup”, we always have the buyer officially “buy” the item on eBay before they come.
We usually require they pay through Paypal so the money has been transferred.
But you could also remove “immediate payment” and then accept cash in person.
We like Paypal because then there’s no haggling when the buyer arrives with cash.Obviously you can sell these items on Craigslist if you want to avoid fees.

Bummer…
I agree with Jay and Ryanne. I won’t meet with people unless a purchase has been made.
Recently I did make an exception to the rule. I had an item and I wasn’t 100% sure on the year of the car that it fit. A potential buyer really wanted it and we agreed to meet to see if it would fit his car. Since it did, we made a cash deal on the spot.
I then asked him to make the official purchase on Ebay, later when he got home. He did and I marked it paid and shipped.

I also make an sales invoice, I have a blank square at the top where I put their drivers license. I then make them sign it saying they have picked up the item and the transaction is complete. I scan two copies one for them and one for me.
This all stemmed from a local pickup where the customer told ebay he didn’t pick it up. Since I didnt have proof ebay sided with the customer.

One trick that has worked for some is to take a picture of your contact info and send in messages.
The Ebay Bots that tripped you up don’t scan pictures.
Not that i’m condoning it…just sayin…-
