I knew the buyer was going to be difficult as soon as she sent me her initial offer. It’s a vtg Lilly Pulitzer skirt that was listed for less than a few hours. I thought about declining and blocking. I did not. I countered and she accepted. Now she has sent me 2 messages asking why I’m charging sales tax when she’s never had to pay sales tax on ebay before. She resides in the same state as me so I have to charge and remit sales tax. I even sent her a link to the law. She replies that she “practices law” in Georgia and yet she is still questioning me. So I basically reiterated the law back to her. I’m guessing she either doesn’t “practice law” and was using that as some kind of threat or she works in an office where there are people who maybe “practice” law. State sales tax is a pretty basic law to understand especially for anyone that claims to “practice” it. I want to cancel the order and take the defect because I can tell already that she will get the skirt and find something wrong with it that will cause this transaction to continue to be a headache. I’m waiting for her to reply to my last email first.

If you dont mind a defect, cancel and block. A single defect is no big deal and would buy you peace of mind.
Or call eBay and ask them what their opinion is. If she were to give you negative feedback for charging sales tax, they would remove it.

I would offer that if you choose not to cancel, if she contacts you again about the cost and the item has not been shipped, let her know that she is free to cancel the order and to let you know if she is going to do so. I would offer not to go into any further details or explainations.

Thanks All,
I offered to cancel in both of my replies to her and I was really hoping she’d ask to cancel. Anyway, after my 2nd reply to her she responded that she didn’t know people had “stores” on ebay (I never mentioned anything about a store) and although she is not a tax attorney she understands I must charge the tax (insert my eyeroll here)…..Then she said she’d pay later. Sighhhhhh… It’s never just 1 issue with these kinds of buyers.Anyway, thanks for this little corner of the forum for allowing me to vent about a customer. It really does help!

You’re totally getting that item back in a INAD. Lol!
On the flipside of this, I purchased a timeshare vacation week a few years back and the seller attempted to charge me sales tax. I pointed out the law to him and asked him for evidence for why he was collecting sales tax from me when it was not required. He gave me a BS excuse about it being an error and quickly updated the invoice. Pretty nice way to score an extra 8% on sales there since most people wouldn’t know the law enough to complain.

Retro – Oh I fully expect to get the skirt back as an INAD. I even told my husband last night to “mark my words – the skirt will be returned as not as described.” It’s crazy how easy it is to spot these kinds of buyers even from just their initial offer. Just thankful I don’t have to deal with customers face-to-face. I can only imagine the customer issues the store manager at any given Wal-Mart on any given day must have to deal with.
