I bought some hats on eBay on July 11 and received this message from the seller yesterday (July 18th). Prior to this I had heard from someone claiming to be her son saying she was sick and there would be a delay in shipping:
“As promised I took you package to the postoffice yesterday afternoon after packaging it. I am so sorry to say but 2 out of 3 packages cost a lot more than was charge for shipping. Normally when something like this happens I go and pay the difference if it is $5.00 or less but the cost is $28.75 instead of $14.00
I am asking you please to send the difference to Payl Pal for me to ship your package.
Unfortunately, I can’t afford it, I am living on a fixed income of $751.00 a month and this is how I make my extra income.
Thank you very much for your patience in waiting for your item, sick I have been sick in the hospital. Dorothy” -

First off, you can tell her that she needs to combine the hats into one package in order to stay within the shipping costs. That is the easiest solution. If she still gives you trouble and continues to ask for more money, then it is certainly a scam. (Even if it isn’t a scam, it seems like she is using her situation to obtain more money).
What they are asking is outside of eBay policy. The seller is supposed to use the provided tool to accurately calculate shipping costs. You can then chose between a few options:
You can cancel the purchase. eBay will certainly back you up.
If you still want them, you can say that her request for more money is against eBay policy and she needs to ship them to you anyway.
Lastly, if you feel bad about her situation (and believe it), then you can just pay up.
I’ll be interested in what path you chose.

yeah let us know. as we all know from being sellers, if you mess up on postage, that’s your fault not the buyer’s fault. she shouldn’t be asking for more money for shipping for hats (or anything really), period, end of story.

Agree with above but also if you bought several items from a single seller, when you are maing selections in the future, put them into your “Shopping Cart”, then do a “Time to Check Out” and if they are like kind items, Ebay will do an automatic combo shipping anyway and present the seller with a total. They in turn combo pack and print out on label. But Ebay at times will get ‘wonkey” on this. Also another suggestion is to contact the seller, inform them that you would like several of there items, make a “bundled price offer” on them dircetly in the message and then remind them of combo shipping, and request an “Invoice” from them. That way it forces them if they accept, to combine shipping and look up the costs and also confirms everything in writing to you on the invoice.
Or follow the above suggestions.

What kind of hats will cost $28 to ship?

Is $28.75 a reasonable cost for shipping or is the seller not being a smart efficient shipper?
Can you advise her on a better way to ship the items.
Yes, you would be justified in demanding her to ship the items for the agreed upon price, but maybe there is another solution.

I’ve just purchased a lot of 100 hats and was quoted shipping of $29 on an 18lb box. For reference/comparison purposes. However, mine are being shipped Fedex.

One of the ScavengerLife members created this “GREAT” web site a few years ago and it is very useful in determing what shipping should be, what alternatives you have, which way is cheapest for both you as a seller and also as a buyer.
I even belive Jay and Ryanne have this “tool” listed in the SL section of “Tools and Resources. I have it book marked and use it all the time on my heavier and larger packages when creating my listings and selecting which shipping policies I should offer as options. I put in a 12x12x12 and your weight. But, since I don’t know the actual box size or the ship from or ship to zip it is probably not accurate. You can go to the site and put in the correct numbers and it will show you which box to use, what carriers are available and what the associated costs are.
I suggest you also bookmark the site and use it often in your listing process. I play “what if” with it all the time. What if I use this size box, what if a pound more or less in weight, etc., etc.
Hope this helps somewhat…
