Here’s my breakdown of the Bulk Shipping Editor tool in eBay for those who have a store. I wanted to break down the process to demonstrate that there is ability to not have your items perfectly weighed and sized before the label creation process, and still use the tool successfully. I thought I’d give a shout out to you, Ryanne, to see if any of this addresses some of the concerns you’ve shared on recent podcasts!
I have 5 items to ship (that’s a big day for me!) I have a good guess at what the weights will be and a rough estimate as to the sizes. I typically list everything at the slowest possible method, which is most often USPS Parcel Post Ground, and then if I can either save money and/or shipping time by using another method, I will.
1. Gather items. I have my items, my scale and my shipping supplies all at the ready
2. On eBay, go to Orders, select “Awaiting Shipment”
3. Check the box at the top of the list of items, so as to select all the items & choose “Print Shipping Labels” from the Shipping Action button at the top of the list
4. On the Print Shipping Labels screen, select the “US Postage Service or FedEx shipping label” radial button under the “Purchase and print shipping labels” heading. This is the first heading and may already be pre-selected. Click the “Continue” button at the bottom of the page
5. The first time you use this feature, you’ll want to set up your label preferences by clicking on the small words “label preferences” on the upper right hand portion of your screen. This will allow you to have part of the title of the item appear in micro print on the shipping label making finding the right label for the right item a breeze. First, you have the choice of selecting your paper size for your printer, and if you wish to set up one label per page (the default is 2 labels on the page). The second choice is for what appears on your label. Select “Automatically populate custom text to be printed on label” and then from the drop down box, select “Item Title”
6. Return to the Bulk Shipping page and select the box at the top of the list of items so as to choose all the item
7. From the Action Button above the list of items, select “Edit Shipping Record”
8. You’ll get a pop-up screen with the first of your items. In the lower left corner of the pop-up screen, you’ll see number. In my case, it is 1 of 5
9. From here you can adjust the shipping method and carrier as well as the weight and size attributes. Notice that the title of your item appears (partially) in the custom label field so you know what item record you’re in
10. Make the adjustments you’d like by selecting the “change dimensions” link. You can change the weight, size, and the method here. If you need to change from USPS to FedEx, you have to do that from the compare rates link. When you’re done with your refinements on the change dimensions page, click save. You’ll be back in the previous page where you have an opportunity to select compare rates if you want to check out the other carrier, or do things like add insurance, etc. Once satisfied, click “save and next”. You’ll go through all your listings in the same manner. When you get to the last item, click “Save and Close”
11. As I am working through my items, I am packing each one. I also write, in marker, the item name where I will be affixing the shipping label, so that I can remember which package is which
12. You’re now at the Review & Pay screen where you have a chance to verify the total amount of postage for all packages. If something is wrong, you can still restart the editing process from this page to get each individual item exactly as you want it
13. when you click the “Review and Pay” button, you come to a screen where you can actually review the totals in a matrix and then select your method of payment, which is PayPal. Click the “PayPal” button to pay your shipping total or cancel and return to edit
14. You now come to a print shipping labels screen where you have the option to: Postage Label, Receipt, and/or Packing List. Make your desired selections and click the “Print” button. Print labels as per normal
15. When you’re done printing the labels, and close out the printing tab on your browser, you’ll find that you can order your USPS free pick up by selecting the “Request a Free Carrier Pickup” link on the right hand side of the pageIt couldn’t be easier! The problem of knowing which label goes with which item is solved by printing the item title on the label (it appears in very small print and vertically oriented on the label so as to not easily be read by just anyone viewing the parcel label) and writing the name of the item on your package where you will stick or tape your label.

I’ve been using bulk shipping for years and have never mixed up packages, but I don’t come close to the volume that J & R do. The most I’ve ever shipped in a day is somewhere around 15 after a holiday weekend.
Like marjean, I write an abbreviated name for the item on the package after shipping. While affixing labels, I have my Excel spreadsheet open, so I know which name goes with which item.
What I never knew about was the option to print the item title on the label. That would further eliminate the possibility of a mixup. I wouldn’t even have to look at my spreadsheet. If the title was something that might promote theft, I could easily sharpie over it before mailing.
Thanks for the tip!
