My name is Malinda and my husband and I started our eBay store on January 20th. We both work full time, but are hoping to build up our store over the next 3-6 months so my husband can quit his miserable job. We have been rocking it so far. We have 194 listings and have sold 19 items for about $800. We also have about 40 or so things still to list and are scavenging again today! We have been hard at it, staying up late and not getting enough sleep with the hopes of reaching our goal.
Also, full disclosure, I have worked at eBay as a Program and Project Manager for 7 years (and love it!) and it’s fascinating to hear the comments and questions everyone has about eBay.
I’ve been binge listening to the podcast for the last 3 weeks (like I did with 6 seasons of Game of Thrones) and I’m loving it! So much to say, but I’m also learning so much about eBay myself. I’ve been buying and selling casually on eBay since 2001, but when you think about doing it for a living, it changes everything.
Anyway, love all the listeners and Jay and Ryanne. Thanks for everything you contributed to the eBay and Scavenger Life community!

Welcome Malinda. Sounds like you guys are off to a great start. Now the key is to keep building a logical process of listing items without burnout. Working hard is important, but make sure it’s fun and interesting. Glad you found us.

As someone who has worked for Ebay, do you know how they test software prior to installing it live on their site? We’ve had to deal with some significant Ebay bugs in the last week or so, and the update didn’t seem to be fully tested.
I was actually a lead for a software team at one time. It was a government customer. The software developers didn’t care for test team, probably because we found so many bugs. Maybe there is a similar mind set at Ebay?

We definitely have a rigorous Quality Engineering team that works hard to test all of the changes that we implement. But, as someone who has been in software development for a very long time, I recognize that bugs do occur, even though testing has been done. The eBay platform is very complicated and there are a lot of different things that have to play together nicely and a lot of different scenarios and use cases that can occur. I think part of the challenge is that eBay was built a very long time ago and technology has changed significantly over the last 30 years. It’s always a challenge to find the right balance between building new and shiny features for your customers to use and enjoy and to go back and replace the foundational elements of your platform to work with new technology and to work well with the new features you build. What we usually try to do after testing is to ramp changes to smaller populations first so we can see what the impact is before rolling out to a larger audience. eBay works hard to get it right, but sometimes we get it wrong and then work to correct. 🙂 It’s the nature of working with technology. I know I have a love/hate relationship with a lot of the technology I use. 🙂

I think we’ve all seen the parts of eBay that are still from the late 90’s try to work with the stuff they’ve just recently built. It’s really like trying to change the engines on a place in mid-flight.

Yeh, I get that. They do the best that they can.
My experience in software is similar, although, there was a definite animosity between the developers and the test team. It didn’t help that the government decided to hire different companies to do each function.
Ebay is a great company, and I am glad that I am able to make money using their platform.

So happy to be in a group of eBay users! My husband and I had a great scavenger weekend and night. We now have 214 listings and are shipping out 6 things Monday morning (7 if one more pays!). We have never had so much fun doing “work”!
