I’ve been listening and lurking about for around a year now, so it’s probably time I properly introduce myself. My name is Deb and my eBay store is Retiredtreasures719. I found Scavenger Life last winter when I was recovering from double knee replacement surgery. I had been retired for about 6 months at the time and was realizing that I wasn’t old enough for the usual retirement activities (I was only 54) and that my retirement pension, while adequate, wasn’t going to allow much in extras. I am a caregiver for my 93 year old father and my husband has his share of health issues and doesn’t drive, so I needed an income source that was pretty flexible.
After listening to a few weeks of Scavenger Life and especially ‘What sold this week’ I realized this could be exactly what I needed. I tell my husband all the time that this is fulfilling my 5th grade desire of being an archeologist! I love the treasure hunt and as a retired librarian, I love researching the items I bring home.
In the last year, I’ve gone from a non store account of around 100 items mostly auction listings to a store of almost 700 items mostly ‘Buy It Now.’ Sales have been enough to keep in wine and bail me of a couple of tight spots when I really needed it. My goal is upgrade the quality of my items and keep my store between 900-1000 items. Financially, I’d like to build up our savings account and pay off debt (at least one card this year.)
Thank you Jay and Ryanne for hosting this VERY helpful forum and to everyone who posts. I have learned tons in the last year and I find all the shared information extremely helpful! I hope I can share things that will help all of you!

Hi Deb!
It’s great to hear your story. I graduated high school in Milan, OH. Not sure if that’s anywhere near you, but I loved Ohio while I lived there! Cedar Point!
Looking forward to hearing from you. It sounds like your need for flexibility matches mine (I’m a full time student, who also volunteers, shadows physicians, has a family, and remains a military reservist). Good luck to you! See you around. 🙂

Hi Deb,
I’m Sharon, I am also from Ohio, about an hour South of you out in the country – so nice to “meet” you! My eBay user name/store is ‘4knowledgeandwisdom’. We have similar size stores… I am a stay at home mom of 4 and use eBay to maintain my sanity and make money from home without the necessity of having to pay daycare costs. It’s hard to truly do this “full time” without constant interruptions, so I work my kids into the flow of the day and do the best I can, whenever I can! Ebay has helped us tremendously with the added income, and it is the best job I have ever had! I love it. Have you been to our ‘local’ Goodwill Outlet in Kettering? It is worth the trip.. and quite an experience 🙂 -

I went once Sharon-I have to admit I was of two minds about the experience. I kind of felt like I needed a shower after I left there, lol! However, I spent $16 and almost immediately sold two of the items for over $50. Not sure I’ll drive down there just to go there, but it’s certainly somewhere I will visit if I’m in the area. Watching people attack the bins when they were brought out was quite the experience.
Wally you sound like a med student. My future son-in-law is in his 1st year of residency. I’m in south western Ohio, about 3 hours from where you grew up. I did love Cedar Point when I was younger!

Yes, I know what you mean regarding the GWO… As I explained to a friend after the first time, “Half of me felt repulsion and the other half fascination…” But now I am hooked and make the hour trip once or twice a month. The sourcing is crazy cheap and I have found amazing vintage items that I pay less than $1.00 for and can sell for $30, $40, and even $50-$100+ when I am lucky. There are some strange characters there for sure and I try to go without my kids and I stay away from the masses of people attacking. (What exactly are they fighting for? I don’t think they could even tell you.) There is also a good thrift store across the street, (Valley Thrift) that is fun to walk through so I make an afternoon of it. Take care!

I didn’t know about Valley Thrift! That makes it a more worthwhile trip. I will check it out! Thanks for the info!
