Sometimes I just don’t know what people are thinking. On my Etsy shop I sold a piece of fabric to someone in Canada for $8 and she paid $15.35 for shipping. She emailed me the other day saying that she had changed her mind about the fabric and would I accept a return.
I was feeling generous and I said yes, as long as she hadn’t washed it. I also told her that I wouldn’t be able to refund the shipping fee of $15 so she would get a $8 refund AND she’d have to pay to ship the fabric back to me, which would cost her more to ship it back to me than she’d get back in refund.
She just emailed me this morning to tell me that she had mailed it back to me yesterday and please give her the $8 refund once I got it back.
It was my laugh for the morning. Anyone else run into this?

Sounds like she did not know what to do with the unwanted material, so instead of throwing it away (which could be considered a waste of money) or giving it away (which could be a loss of money), she wanted her money in order to rectify the wrong that occured for her in making the purchase. It’a all about perspective and focus.

I think maybe she didn’t do the math!

Happens all the time. People change their minds and we’re happy to take a return. But they often pay for more in shipping back and forth than the price of the item. I dont think most people are aware of shipping costs the way eBat sellers are.

AdventureE, I see what you are saying. But it’s costing her $15 to get a $8 refund. So in the end, she has no fabric and a loss of $30. If she had donated the fabric, she’d be out $23.

I agree that people don’t do the math or aren’t aware of shipping costs.
However, I patiently explained to her when I told her that I would accept her return, that she would lose money by shipping the fabric back to me. I tried to help her in that aspect. That’s what I don’t get.

It’s not about the money. It’s about the purchase and clearing the unknown – what to do with the fabric? Obviously, she can’t just sit and look at fabric and not know what to do with it (especially if she is a sewer and does not wish to have stuff she cannot use). When one gets singularly focused, the larger perspective seen by others is often not seen by the one. We all do this in some form or another. For example, some people focus on losing weight and exercise everyday but their diet consists of fast food, alcohol, and/or sugary treats. Then they wonder why they are not losing (and in some cases are even gaining) weight. They are singularly focused and for some reason are not able to see the larger picture.

TLDR; People can be kooky.

AdventureE,
Ah, I get it. It’s about closure and focus. Thanks for the insight.

Yes, I think it is Vintage Lacy. We humans are mysterious complex beings which really comes through in the world of business.

We all get the kooks. I had a NAD skirt a few weeks ago. She claimed that it was not as described and then in her note to me said “plus it doesn’t fit” Uhhh..thank you now you get to pay return shipping. It took her two weeks to ship back…via FedEx two day express. Of course she shipped it from work and probably didn’t pay anything. But she left positive feedback before shipping back. Totally strange.

I should have but we had a family medical emergency and eBay had to take care of itself for a while.

LoL…I got a Head Scratcher last week… someone sent me an eBay offer of $24.63 for an item I had priced at $22 ?? I didn’t even know you could send in an offer above the selling price, giggles…I would just assume the system would have a default notification of some sort ???
Maybe they were trying to send an offer that included shipping, I don’t know … shrugs… but I accepted instead of countering with the lower listed price, mostly out of curiosity … they paid the $24.63 + shipping charge.
