Kinda a long question so I’ll start with the TL;DR: I need to extend handling time but the bulk editor wont let me do it and I’m afraid using the business policy option will screw up my shipping option. Any advice?
Hi guys, I’m hoping someone can help me out with an issue I am having regarding handling time. I need to extend my handling time out to 10 days for an upcoming trip I’m having. I’ve tried to attack this two ways and not had any luck:
1. Fist I tried the bulk edit tool. I’ve only 160 listing so this should work. However, in the bulk edit tool, once I’ve selected all items > edit field, handling time is not one of the fields listed to edit. I’ve researched this, and there are many posts saying this field should included in the drop down when clicking on “edit fields”. I’ve seen people post pictures showing that it is an option. Often these posts turn into an arguement, with some people saying “it’s there!” and others saying “no, its not!”
2. Second, I’ve heard Jay and Ryanne talk on the podcast about setting a business policy to adjust handling time. When I went in to do this, I obviously saw where to extend the handling time, but it also wants me to select at least one shipping method. My listing as set up with some priority, some media mail, some first class, etc. Accordingly, I’m concerned about setting up a policy that might affect the shipping method, when all I want to do is set the handling time.

I have had to completely turn OFF business policies (opt out). Even if you don’t have any created, if you are opted ‘in’ it will not show up in bulk tool.

Your issue with bulk editing is strange. I never had a problem with it, but I don’t use the bulk editor for handling time now that I have business policies.
One thought is to change your browser. I know I was having problems using eBay on Internet Explorer (a year or two ago), so I switched to Chrome. Otherwise, call eBay and ask for help. Not sure that they will be able to help, though.
When I opted into business policies, the software set up the policies for me, one for each type of shipping method; One for first class, one for media mail, one for priority, etc. The first time you set it up, the software will group up your listings under the policy it matches, then you can go back and consolidate.
The issue is that it takes time for the policies to set up. If you are planning your trip in the next day or two, you won’t have time to get it set up and then change the handling time.
Also, what you are saying about it asking for a shipping method – I wonder if the process has changed. Perhaps someone who has set it up recently can speak to that.

Sharyn,
When I first set up business policies, the software set them up for me too, based on the listings I had at the time, just as you mentioned. When I say it is asking for a shipping method – I mean I’m trying to create a brand new policy and it wont let me just set the policy for handling, it wants a shipping method (or multiple shipping methods) as well. Ideally, I like to have a policy for 10 day handling – which i could then apply to all listings across the board, regardless of shipping method. Thanks for your reply! -

Oh, you have opted into business policies? Well, that explains everything.
The reason you don’t see handling time on the bulk editor is because it is now part of your business policies. Once you opt in, it’s an all or nothing sort of thing. You would have to opt back out in order to use the bulk editor.
You need to edit each shipping policy individually, and change the handling time. It’s located under the selection for US shipping. Your return and payment policies don’t need to be touched.
If you have lots of shipping policies and they are disorganized (kind of like mine), you have to be careful that you edit each one. There is a message that pops up on the right side (something like “changes in process”) that will help you keep track.

Re-reading your initial question, I see you are concerned that modifying the shipping policy will affect your other selections. That is not true. The only things that change are the options that you edit. So, whatever you have selected for US shipping, international shipping, any exclusions, etc., those don’t change if all you change is the handling time.

Thank you, yes, someone else had mentioned that being opted in to shipping policies removes the handling time option from bulk editor. And you hit the nail on the head on how to attack the issue. I initially thought I would create a new policy just for handling that would apply to all shipping policies, does that makes sense? However, I realized that handling would have to be modified in each policy instead. I cleaned up all of my shipping policies (got it down to four, I think) and now understand how to adjust handling time for each one.
Thanks for you help, I greatly appreciate you!

It would be nice to just change the handling time once and not have to edit each individual shipping policy. However, you would lose some functionality. For example, you wouldn’t be able to have a longer handling time for your bigger items that use FedEx or Parcel.
