I picked up this cheaply framed Grateful Dead poster at one of my local antique mall haunts. I spent about an hour on phone researching it before talking myself into buying it for $40. (Figured if it isn’t worth reselling, that at least I personally like and will hang it in the office). After more research at home, I could only find a small handful of examples on the internet and none with a for sale (or sold for) $ amount. Most informative find was at the artists website where this was in his 1995 artwork portfolio and listed as “Promotional”. I tried to search on the printing press and company on the poster but not much help there.
Hoping some ‘Deadhead’ (or poster expert… head) can provide a value on this and/or any background since it seems fairly rare out there in the internet nether regions.
Poster measures 19″ x 27″. Bottom left corner: “Published by Misty Mountain Press Inc.” Bottom right corner: “GDP Inc., 2001 / Artwork: R. Biffle”. R. Biffle is Richard Biffle, a well known Grateful Dead artist who has done several tour posters and album covers in the past. Poster is dated 2001 but actual artwork is signed/dated 1995.

Someone I know just sold one for $1,000 but it had a backstory: The poster was in the Grateful Dead’s manager’s office when it was firebombed. The poster had singe marks on it and was later professionally framed. Someone who owned a graphic design firm bought it. She priced very high and took that best offer.

Thank you for everyone’s input. It took me nearly an hour to decide whether to buy this because $40 for a poster was bit much for my low-cost scavenger mindset, but I liked it and couldn’t find anything during that hour on my phone that showed it as a bad deal. I looked at the eBay solds for R. Biffle Grateful Dead posters and most were $75+. Not the best mark-up value but figured worth the gamble since some went for couple hundred (and worst comes to worst, I love the Dead, thought the poster pretty cool and wouldn’t be upset to hang it in my office and hold out for a better price in the future). I’m going to try and get it listed today as an auction and will post the results when it ends for anyone interested in the outcome. If it sells for $1000+, then everyone who has posted here is invited to a free lunch on me (once the plague has ended, of course) down here in South Carolina.

OK.. Worthpoint has thousands of GD posters that have sold. that goes back as far as 2013 and a few have sold in the thousand dollar range but those has great back stories with signatures and paperwork to substantiate them.
This after filtering by price, particular poster first showed up as a sold in 2013 for $40. The next instance that showed up was 2016 again sold for $40.

I am with Jay… Ask higher and take offers and let the market dictate the price. You can decline any lowballers as you choose.

If it’s from 1995 it won’t be a tour poster- they were done by Michael Everett- one for the summer tour and another for the autumn tour which was cancelled ‘cos the lead guitarist succumbed to sleep apnea. From the Walnut Street Gallery website, appears that Richard Biffle was selling posters from his van at the concerts (I’m reading between the lines here) They say he now lives in Nederland (Netherland?) Wouldn’t surprise me, as them Dutch are really big on the old graphic stuff.

He’s in the town of Nederland, Colorado; not to be confused with Nederland, Texas, y’all.
That reference was a while back, not sure if he’s still there. His websites do not provide a current physical address, though he was supposed to do art shows in Denver and Boulder this summer so probably still there. See http://www.olcrowstudio.com and http://www.richardbiffleart.com .
