I can remember the smell of of the coffee and sound of my Dad slurping from a mug just like this one.
I think it is also my the same designer that made Carol Brady’s (of The Brady Bunch) Coffee Mugs – see third photo. These would has been a mass produced item. Possibly from Sears. Does anyone else remember them? Do you know who made them?

Those are cool old mugs. I guess back then, there was probably a sticker on it with the maker’s name. Now gone.

I think the design might be made by applying rice paper to the pottery before firing, so it burns on. The mugs look like they were built up from a spiral of clay on a potter’s wheel, so handmade. Carol Brady’s mug looks like a mass production one- straight sides, recessed base.

@antique – pretty sure these are not handmade – more photos included in the listing.
They are all pretty much identical. If they were handmade, wouldn’t there be variations in the pattern from mug to mug?

@debitendcreits The lines on the outside of the mug look like they form a spiral, which may indicate that it was made using the coiling method (Wiki article) and then the sides smoothed down with wet fingers.
Now you’re going to be looking for mochaware mugs! 🙂

Oh Mugs – I can’t quit you!
Every day that I go out, I tell myself “no more mugs” and then more come home with me.
They sell at a steady clip, but I am running out of space for them.

Otagiri is the keyword for these. I love them too.

Otagiri stoneware was produced and painted by hand by a group of artists hired to design and create pieces. Although Otagiri started manufacturing pieces in the 1950s, it did not officially register its name as a trademark until 1980. Although the company manufactured and stamped its pieces as made in Japan, the Otagiri trademark was registered in the United States.
Authentic Otagiri can be identified by a gold and yellow sticker and the stamp “Otagiri Japan.”

@Antique Frog Thanks for posting that article. I’ve been meaning to learn more about the Otagiri brand. I had been hesitant to use the name unless it was printed on the mug, but it sounds like the brand name can be used as an adjective.
Since the brand was discontinued in 1994 – it’s doesn’t sound like anyone lawyers are hyperactive with VeRO claims (yet).

I learnt something! Never heard of Otagiri till Pythonesk mentioned it. I’ve been on the lookout for genuine old mochaware mugs since I found out about them a couple of years back. Never seen one in the wild, though I’ve bought Georgian and Victorian teacups at yard sales.
