I want to start by saying – I’m not at the point where I can support my family 100% on ebay. Not even close. But that’s the goal. There are days when I’m selling like crazy and it’s awesome… then times when real life happens, kids get sick, then I get sick, and I don’t list for 2 days. Sales start to trickle and eventually stop- 0 sales yesterday.
So Monday is the day I usually like to hit it hard and be super productive – but slow sales combined with the prospect of my first potential “not as described” have kinda made me question what the heck it is I think I’m doing. And as I’m typing this I got am email from a customer telling me that a “New” (shrink wrapped) item they bought from me was empty.. sigh.. lol.
How does eveyone else get through the rough days?

You just have to move past the returns and issues and see the big picture. This weekend I had a buyer write me about an item that had damage. It was evident in the pictures if you looked for it, but I didn’t see it and didn’t disclose it in description. I wrote the buyer, apologized, and issued a full refund immediately. Told him to keep the item and get some use out of it if he could.
Once upon a time, I would not have reacted this way. I would have lost sleep, been frustrated, tried to negotiate a partial refund or a thousand other unproductive potential responses.
In the end, I am out $3 for the item and $7 in shipping. Whoopdedooo! I resolved the problem in less than 5 minutes and moved on with life. My time is too valuable to hem & haw over peanuts.
So take stock of your loss and value that against your time. Pick your battles and with experience, you will be able to better handle the road bumps on the scavenger life freeway.
Good luck!

That’s really good advice, Retro. I read it twice just so it would sink into my own head.
When I hit a slow or ugly patch I try to double down on listing, especially items I know will sell quickly for a good profit. Nothing like that “Cha-ching” sound on chase away yesterday’s blues!

I also think it depends on your options. If you can quit selling on eBay and do something more enjoyable for more money, then it’s an easy decision.
For us, selling on eBay was a much better option than our past jobs. Motivation through desperation. Some grumpy buyers are the least of our worries. We always remind each other the freedom we now have.

I hate grumpy buyers! I love eBay and I’m not going anywhere but all of you are right and it’s not the end of the world.. The cha-chings will make me feel better. 🙂
You guys are the best, thanks for the responses.

Rough days end. They aren’t permanent, just like slow sale days aren’t permanent. Deal with the issues as quickly as possible and then put them behind you.

I hear ya, Thrifted Sister! Some days are good, some are rough. The good days get me through the rough times and I have more good days than not.

rough day = return of $1600 necklace.
yeah, i hear ya. there are rough days where everything seems to happen at once. you get hit with several returns and some random case. and then you’ll go weeks without a peep and just positive feedback. as long as the numbers keep making sense, we keep going. but you’re not alone, trust me. it’s literally why we started this blog. so we wouldn’t feel so lonely.-

I second that. You guys really ARE the best. You’ve helped me so much. I really love Jay’s calm and unemotional approach to returns and bad buyers. And Ryanne’s videos… well, we still watch the old ones… still really miss them! You rawk!
