I put my store in the strictest form of vacation mode for a couple of weeks, the kind where buying items is disabled. The next morning I was very surprised to receive an offer! So basically, you can turn your store off completely, and buyers can’t buy normally, but they can still make offers. I wonder what would have happened if I had tried to accept the offer. Does anybody know? I didn’t try it b/c I won’t be able to fulfill orders for a while, so if it went through, I’d be in trouble.
I can’t think of any reason why ebay would allow this behavior, but maybe I’m missing something?

eBay is odd that way. If you send offers to buyers, it’s not adjusted to your current handling time. And if you accept offers, I think it works the same way. Just another example of an eBay application not thought all the way through before launch.

AtomicStar is correct.
When we were away recently, we put our store on a 10-day handling time. But things were still selling and needed to be shipped next day. Weird.
Here’s what we think happened: we were “sending offers to watchers” before we changed our handling time. Those watchers were accepting our offers when it still had the next-day handling time.
Did you send offers to watchers before you went on vacation? If so, watchers can counter offer your offers. Your vacation mode doesnt retroactively affect those offers.

No I did not send offers on these items before setting vacation mode. Also, I set the vacation mode where my store is really OFF – ie, you can’t make any purchases at all. If you click on “buy it now” you will get a message telling you that you can’t buy the item right now. But you can still make an offer apparently. I tested it out myself as a buyer under a different ebay id. So this issue has nothing to do with handling time or offers sent by me. I really want to try out accepting an offer to find out what happens, but it’s not worth the risk.
well, actually, if I sent an offer from my other account, and then accepted from my seller account, if it did really go through, I could always have myself the buyer cancel the order w/o negatively affecting my seller metrics. If I decide to do this, I’ll report back with what happens.

I’ve heard that even when you hide your listings, watchers can still see them so they can still make offers. If they can make offers maybe they could even buy them. No idea why eBay couldn’t hide listings completely.

Yep, this has happened to me. Same circumstances – my store had been totally locked down for several weeks when it happened. I just messaged the buyer that my store was closed because I was moving, and offered to get back in touch when I re-opened. She was very understanding and bought the item once I was up and running. I actually gave her a slightly better price because she’d been so patient.

Good to know it’s not just me. Not to be super-complainy (but I am), but I wish there was an easier way to message buyers who have submitted an offer. As far as I could tell, there was no “send buyer a message” option when I haven’t accepted the offer. You have to get the item id# in order to send them a message. I guess there are worse problems to have than this. 🙂
