The folksiest messages are the most avid re-sellers!
Like most, happy to entertain offers. If the offer has a message, it usually softens me up!
So many offers this season came in at 60 % off or lower, it would take some real sweet talkin for me to accept!
Best stories: vintage turntable, about 95% functioning – my price 1/3 of what they historically sell for due to condition – get an offer for half of that but a great story about fixing it up for grandpa so he could enjoy his old records. Touching! Until I checked the buyers sold items – identical turntable, sold the month before for 6 times what I was asking!!!
So I guess grandpa is using Spotify and my price was fair!
( follow up, kept the table, added a resistor and some lube, replaced stylus, back in action. And, the guy reached out a few weeks later – over and over – with higher offers!)

Next, had some slot car stuff, action tracks and vehicles, fairly priced – right away get super low offers with lots of gee whiz gosh darn bless you comments – yikes – would have countered but the guy was again a regular trader in the sets. Again, learned my prices were very fair and I didn’t fall for it. Good thing too, everything sold for full prices within a couple days!Caveat:
I’ve bought stuff and resold it – all the time – and happy to sell to someone who could do a better job, bundle, etc..
Just think it’s funny that people will spin a tale on the “no secrets” internet.

I think most of the times someone has bought my stuff and resold it they just Buy it outright and then I find out later they resold it for much more. Which is FINE by me. I just note it for next time.
But the pre-haggling is hilarious.
One woman I sold a unique garment vintage item has a huge following for this product and it’s all she sells. So, I learned a few things from that transaction although the lost profits of me mismarking it kill me. -
I have a separate account for buying, so it isn’t obvious what I’m doing. I usually just buy straight out without any deception or clever stories.
I bought a vintage Matchbox on Ebay and listed it on my selling account for 3 times the price. The guy who sold it to me sent me a low ball offer with a message. He had found my selling account and wasn’t happy.
It sold within a couple of months for full price to a buyer in Canada.
If the seller had done a little research, he would have found my sold listings. In fact I sold the car so many times, that my title was showing up on the new listings.
Lately, it seems that I’m getting messages with offers on items that have best offer in the listing. It’s a bit annoying, that they just don’t hit the best offer button. I don’t know if they are just fishing or what.
You just never know who is on the other end of the internet.

I took an offer on an already low-priced hat and the buyer also wanted a refund of any overage on shipping. I agreed like a schmuck. I recognized her town so looked at her house on google street view and it’s a fancy schmancy house in an expensive neighborhood. I had to laugh as I refunded her 1.74 for shipping overage. Some people are just so effin cheap.

My theory is that those resellers with the stories are old-school antique dealers and pickers. The sob story was a common negotiating tactic when sourcing in person in the days before eBay. That they’re not quite sophisticated enough on the platform to realize that their use of the same account to buy and sell is transparent to others is another clue that they’re of my vintage or older.
I use a different account to buy on eBay but as a frequent sniper of often relatively unique items I don’t relist them right away to try and avoid any drama from the previous seller.
