I have sold three large items on FB Marketplace, and I like it! For large items that are hard to ship, it’s a great solution and I find it super easy to use.
We are in an urban area (Los Angeles) and there are LOTS of people using it to sell and buy. I get messages on my phone via Messenger and I can reply VERY quickly and get quick replies (it is like chatting.)
I sold a all in one computer 115.00
A three-pane-window mirror 50.00
A super large wooden antique tool box / tote 60.00I have some other large items listed but they are not getting much attention right now. The tool box took a while but eventually it sold. The computer and the window mirror — sold fast!!!

I don’t understand the question…
For me FB is cleaner and easier to use. But if you are used to Craigslist then you might think differently.

Sorry, I edited the question to make more sense 🙂
“Is Facebook Marketplace markedly different than Craigslist?”Just curious is Facebook attracts less flaky buyers or has a better interface. We sell on Craigslist pretty successfully for our rural area, but its a lot of work sending messages bck and forth.

Hi Jay,
I am in Los Angeles and there are flakes on FB as well as CL. I just sold a computer on FB. Two people stood me up in the process. The third guy was a super cute young man that wanted to donate the computer to a charity after he bought it from me. The window sale was great, she came she loved it she paid. The tool box too was great, he came he loved it and he sent me a picture of what he did with it (he made it into an amazing plant box.)
I have yet to try selling on CL but I have given away stuff for free when I needed to purge. I always demand a cell phone or I won’t answer and then I continue with texts from there on out. So far except once, everyone has been super cool.
For selling I just found it easier to post on FB and to answer questions quickly through messenger either by phone or on the desk top, rather than email back and forth.
I am looking on FB now to see what is in Luray. I see lots of people selling stuff in a 10 mile radius.
I took a screen shot for you:

Thanks for the Facebook link. Definitely more than on our local craigslist.

And those were just “antiques”. There was a whole lot more than that. Lots of honey! I remember you guys mentioning local honey.

I’ve had some luck with local Facebook groups, but I do think location makes a difference. I’m not just basically rural/small town, but , unlike Jay, I’m basically rural/small town without much in the way of tourist/cultural stuff….a good bit of my area is somewhat depressed, and most people seem to be looking for bargains (probably to resell LOL).
Still, I’m going to be pulling out some larger items from storage pretty soon, and I’ll probably give them a go.

My Cottage, keep us posted so we can compare notes.

Siglini, Will do. I often pass up larger items because of the time and expense of the shipping, but if it turns out FB is a good market for this stuff without shipping, I’ll be buying more….

I currently have about 4-5 items on FB (that are also on my Ebay store) that are getting no traction at all… so it is still in the testing mode but I believe some things will sell.
My recommendation is to cross list what you already have on Ebay (that is large) and see how that goes.

Do you list the ebay stuff as Local Pick Up Only, or do you list them with shipping?
-

My Cottage: for FB I do a listing, not a link to my Ebay store, and it is local pick up only. As far as I know there are no shipping options on FB and I wouldn’t use them if they did –no protection for sellers or buyers. Local pick up ensures the buyer sees what they have before they take it away. As in the case of the computer we just sold, the buyer tested the item in our home before they took it away.

For me FB Marketplace is much easier than CL to list an item and if you belong to several local selling groups you can target your item for the largest groups.
That way you item shows up in the news feed of individuals that belong to the group not just people browsing FB. I usually see that my items have been ‘shared’ with their friends.
So often items sell in a matter of hours. Because I’m a full time scavenger seller I’m almost always available, that way deals don’t fall through as much.I don’t know if this is good or bad but I’m pretty sure FB uses photo recognition when you search, as an example, I’ve searched for turntables and been shown a listing for a clock that happens to have a record player in the photo.

Steven S: What is a FB selling group?
-
08/18/2019 at 6:32 pm #66515
Search ‘Rummage sales’ in FB and you should get several in your area.
Join a few with the highest number of members.
When you finish up your listings you can choose those groups along with all of FB Marketplace, those in your groups will get a notification about the item without having to search for it.

I’ll add to Steven’s answer: There are also FB Groups by topic. Almost anything collectible has a FB Group, some prohibit buying and selling, some allow it, and some are buy-sell only.

I went on my FB page, went to Groups on the left side… from there I saw a Buy & Sell category… and I see a lot of groups here for the Los Angeles County area that are for buyers and sellers. A bit overwhelming at the moment… trying to understand what the heck is going on here…

Update: Steve, I don’t see anything about Rummage Sales as far groups are concerned. MyCottage, I don’t see anything to do with collectibles. I do see a bunch of groups that buy, sell, trade and I do see the ones with large number of members. I have asked to join about three or four of them and my request is pending.

Sig, go to Facebook search and put in the name of a town near you….Facebook will show you some FB pages with the town name in the title…if none include words like rummage sale, yard sale, buy and sell, etc, try adding any of those words to the town’s name as a search term. There’s no consistency here. ANYONE can create a group or a page. For example, in my little area off the top of my head I can think of 6 or 7 such groups…many people cross post to the groups because they overlap so much. But FB isn’t like CL, where CL basically creates something and people post to it. Say you live in an area known as Splendid Valley….there could be a Splendid Valley Yard Sales page, a Splendid Valley Trading Post page, a Splendid Valley Buy and Sell, a Splendid Valley Moms Selling Kids Clothing…..
And as to pages for Collectible stuff : Just put in terms like Italian Pottery, Royal Haeger, Pennsylvania Antiques, Lefton, Stoneware….you’ll find groups dedicated to this stuff, often more than one group….

So funny, MyCottage: you nicknamed my nickname!LOL
I have been approved on two groups, I will let you know how that goes!

Sig, I found the easiest way to find groups that I’m interested in on FB is to go to Marketplace and browse under the categories on the left. I usually select the Classifieds category (very little new stuff in there) and, if I find a group that seems to interest me, follow the links to it. Most of the stuff posted in the groups is on the Marketplace anyway.

Thank you Amatino! I appreciate the feedback. I have been accepted into two local groups. One problem I am facing with FB marketplace in general that I had not expected is I have gotten a lot of messages in Spanish and in these groups, most of the posts are in Spanish. Time to learn a third language!

LOL. Google Translate is your friend! 😀
I even use Translate when I meet up in person. Speak my sentence into the mic-operated input, and it says the Spanish. Let them speak into it with Spanish and it translates for me into English (no hablo muy bien Espanol!) Translate is kinda clunky, but it def works for me IRL

Amatino, awesome! I will give it a try. FB also has a translator but as you know, it does not always get the essence of the communication but it does ok.

I’ve been testing FB Marketplace out lately instead of Craigslist on bigger items I’d rather not ship or can’t ship, I’m liking it also. My closest Craigslist area is approx 50 miles away and it seemed like the majority of interested buyers were always south of that…the distance factor killed many potential sales. Marketplace brings in more locals, and things seem to move a lot faster.

icequeen, On CL, I’m in the same boat…CL is focused on urban centers, and I’m not really close enough to any of them to draw a lot of people. Facebook makes it easier to attract actual locals.

I met a woman at the Goodwill Outlet who ONLY sells on Facebook Marketplace. She just leaves the items on her porch and her buyers leave the payment for their purchase under her doormat. She said large items like rugs sell really well and that she’d never had a problem with people not paying. Judging from the amount of items she was buying she must do really well with it…

I’m not sure but wouldn’t FB have less scammers? You can see their real name and a photo and maybe more background on FB.
Craigslist is packed with anonymous scammers trying to do counterfeit checks and wire scams, both on the buyer and seller side.
