Has anyone noticed a difference in how Ebay accounts for sales tax charged on our sales? Last month I was doing my monthly sales tax report and I had to dig into all the raw numbers to collect the portion of my total sales that were sales tax. This month I downloaded my October numbers and it appears that only in-state sales have sales tax that is included in our sales numbers. I’m just wondering if I’m missing something, or if Ebay has stopped included the out of state sales taxes in our sales.

Not sure how eBay is doing the reporting in Managed Payments, but we just sold an item to someone in TX and they were charged sales tax:
Item subtotal$70.00
Shipping$27.83
Sales tax (eBay collected)$8.07
Total**$105.90**Total includes eBay collected tax. We collect and remit tax to the tax authorities in accordance with applicable state law. You don’t have to pay it to the state.

First off, thanks for always being so quick to respond to comments on the forum. I don’t know how you do it!
How do you access your sales numbers? I go to the “see all orders” section of the seller hub and look up the item total and grand total for the last month. My understanding was that the grand total included sales tax charged. They certainly appeared to be included and they were itemized in the CSV for September. (I get the monthly report from the reports are in the new payments section.) But the only sales tax included in the CSV were for the one in-state sale. So I assume that they are still charging sales tax but leaving that out of our sales numbers. I’m glad they did this, if that’s the case.

I went to my “Seller Hub”, then “Manage all orders”. I clicked on the transaction number under Order details which will look like this: 2-06121-07900. The Sales record for that number then has all info on the seller, shipping, and the sales data I shared.
If your logged into your eBay account, this link should take you to your sold items. Just click on one of the items you sold: https://www.ebay.com/sh/ord/?filter=status%3AALL_ORDERS%2Ctimerange%3ACURRENTWEEK

But I don’t know where to find out a monthly breakdown of all the taxes collected and remitted in our name. I’m hoping when we get our 1099 from eBay, they do not include taxes in our profit.

I see what you mean there. So they are definitely still charging tax but if I’m correct, they stopped including the tax in our grand total sales for the month (unless it’s an in-state sale.) I get the grand total number by clicking the little blue “i” following the “results” near the top of the “manage all orders” page.

Got it. So thats good for us, right? Means we wont have to prove to the IRS that the taxes collected were income and were paid out. Seems eBay is not treating collected taxes as income.

When you go to the new “payments’ area, and then to the “reports” page, you can select a date range and get a in-depth breakdown for the last month. In September, many (but not all) of the transactions showed sales tax that had been collected. I believe that these taxes were included in the “Grand Total” number that you can access on the “Manage all orders” page. That seems to have changed in October’s numbers.
It’s pretty important to know if our monthly sales include taxes collected by Ebay, because if we don’t subtract them out, then we are paying taxes on income that we didn’t actually receive. It would be nice if Ebay sent us a simple breakdown so that we knew exactly how much we made in sales, how much we paid in shipping, etc. Maybe I’m overcomplicating things? Who knows.

In summation: It appears that, for some portion of this year, Ebay was reporting sales tax as a portion of our sales. If anyone can shed some light on how they account for that it would be great! I remember in a past podcast there was a discussion of how to make sure that you don’t report sales tax in your sales and I’ve been trying to stay on top of this but it isn’t easy when Ebay changes things up without letting us know.

We’re going to wait till we get our 1099 from Paypal and eBay in the next couple months. Be interesting to see if they include those taxes. If so, I guess we’ll just need to find documentation that eBay paid it.

I’ve been using the report download on this page. It seems to have Sale Tax for all transactions: https://www.ebay.com/sh/performance/sales?referencePeriodFilter=LAST_MONTH&benchmarkPeriodFilter=LAST_MONTH&selectedMarketPlaceIds=EBAY_US
I find it pretty painful to try and reconcile the ebay numbers with my own calculations. I try and do it monthly but there always seems to be a difference.

I had not checked out the Performance area of the site yet but that is great. At a glance, I’m seeing almost all the numbers I need for a given month. The only thing I’m unclear on is how they account for returns and refunds but I can get some of that info from the returns area under “manage all orders”. Thanks!!
