Ryan & Jay
I had an idea that it would be cool to have a sticky created with cleaning & repair tips for a variety of items.
Then People can post their tips with a subject of what type of item they are giving the tip for.
Example Cleaning Brass Rust Clothing Stains etc.
I thought it would be very useful to have it all in one place..
Just a thought. -

It would be great to have a thread titled something like cleaning tips, so anyone researching cleaning could just type those words in and easily find the thread.

There is a thread called Cleaning Tips. I just searched for it and found it.
Cleaning Tips – How to Remove Price Marks, Tags, and other Annoyances

That is really good to know. Thank you for bringing it forward so all of us can benefit from it. If you have a current tip, it would be great if you could put it in that thread so it becomes active again allowing for others to add to it.

What? Nobody liked my joke? Huh. -sulks- 😉
JoeMEZZ, a sticky is a post that stays on top of a thread. If you go to the ID What Is This thread, you’ll see Jay’s sticky on the top there, with instructions on how to post a photo.

Amatino – I initially didn’t get the joke, but figured it out much later! I’m slow at times; maybe others are as well.

The place I hate for pricing labels is Savers / Value Village. They are horrible to take off, and impossible on paper based items without tearing.
I use a bottle of 99 cent store rubbing alcohol to get what isn’t easily removed from these labels (usually a bit of paper and adhesive) and it works well. The only problem with alcohol is on printed plastics – it may eat the printing as well so you have to be careful.

My “Crazy” cleaning tip is for electronics – for anything that I can take apart and has a case (plastic or metal), or other parts that are not electrical, I put the outer case/knobs/dials/etc. in the dishwasher on cold setting.
It cleans every crevice perfectly to make it look new with minimal effort. Anything else electronic I have to use q-tips, toothbrushes, vacuums or anything else to get them clean.

Has anyone ever tried cleaning a wool carpet – like a hand knotted wool carpet? I have an 8′ x 10′ Aubusson carpet that is in great condition but it is dirty from foot traffic. It looks like it might clean up into something amazing. I am hesitant to get it professionally cleaned and I have never tried this myself, nor can I find any reliable info in the internet. My sister indicates that I could probably clean it in a bathtub, but might have a hard time drying it and keeping in a square shape. I am thinking I will spread it out on a rubber mat after cleaning and point fans at it and let Colorado low humidity do the work. Would love input.

I think you’d have a very hard time lifting it out of the tub once it is wet. If you can get it outside, and have a sturdy place to hang it for drying then I’d attempt it. We’ve cleaned smaller wool rugs outside in a large tub of water. I used Woolite and an organic pyrethrin type of insecticide since we had wool moths. Just agitated them by hand for a little while, tons of dirt came out, then rinsed and hung them up outside until they stopped dripping. Then moved them indoors out of direct sunlight to finish drying. It was an adventure.

Aperture – the product I’ve been using for cleaning a large variety of items (including the written paint price tag of shoe soles!) is Folex. https://www.ebay.com/i/253420849760?chn=ps&dispItem=1
I got mine at Home Depot for less, if you have one in your area, check out the prices.
This stuff is AWESOME!
So far I have used it to clean my car seats after my grandson dropped strawberry milkshake on it. Unfortunately we were on a long road trip, so it was nearly a week until I got home, then had to pack them back off to airports etc, so about 2-3 weeks before I actually got around to cleaning it. Cleaned up with absolutely no stains, marks, or residue. The upholstery was a kind of greige. Used it on my handwoven Pakistani wool rug to clean dog sick. Rug color dark greens and blues. Used it on a brown Target hall runner. Cleaned a spot off a sweater, and some unidentified marks off a handbag. I regularly use it to clean the written price stickers off shoes – works on everything except Sharpie. Please, God, somebody find a solution that works on Sharpie! It’s my go-to fabric cleaner.

I have a Hoover steam cleaner that has an attachment for more close up cleaning. The attachment doesn’t have a beater bar. A beater bar, which the main cleaning part does have, shouldn’t be used on more delicate items such as a wool rug.
I don’t know, but perhaps the steam cleaners that you can rent from the grocery or hardware store has an attachment like that.

Thanks for all the tips. I am going to try washing the rug outside on the lawn with a rubber mat under it using a hose to soak it and woolite for soap (after testing a corner to make sure the dyes don’t run). I plan to use a new broom as an agitator and will squeegee and wet-vac as much water away as possible, then let it dry in the sun. I don’t think one day of sunlight will damage it much. I will update here with the results.
Also planning to get some Folex. I have kid’s yogurt hand print on the back of my couch I have been unable to completely get out… Thanks again to all. Love this friendly community.

My go to cleaning tool is Magic Erasers or the generic melamine foam.
I can get them on line for cheep but the cheep cheep ones are indeed… cheep and fall part very fast! I have purchased the medium cheep ones and they were much better. The most expensive ones are the Magic Eraser brand and they are the longest lasting.
To save on wasting them I cut the “sponge” into smaller “sponges”. They fall apart after several uses so that way I can make one sponge last much longer.
Sometimes they work on sharpies.
No chemicals needed.
They clean grease, some sticky stuff, markers, and so on. They work on just about most surfaces you just have to test it on items that have paint to make sure the paint does not rub off.
