we get this question so much, it warrants it’s own topic.
we don’t put our store on vacation mode, as that does not change the handling time. we just change our handling time in the bulk editor. since we have 4000+ listings, this takes about 30 minutes to complete. but it’s worth it.
if you have Business Policies in place, you won’t see the choice to change handling time in the bulk editor. so you either change your handling time in your policies or you opt-out of policies and then use the bulk editor.
is this what everyone does? it’s worked for us for many many trips to keep selling while we travel. it’s great.

Yes, this is what I do also. BUT, I do put my store in vacation mode AND I change my handling time on each listing using the bulk editing tool. I use the vacation mode that puts a header at the top of my listings indicating we are on vacation and have an extended handling time (I believe it’s the first box you need to check on the vacation mode setting page). My listings are still active and available to buyers.
I also message each buyer after payment to remind them of the extended handling time.
A usual message would be something like this:
“Thanks so much for buying our item! We just wanted to make sure you noticed we’ve put our store in vacation mode and headed to Georgia to spend time with the grand-kids. Your package will be shipped as soon as we arrive home on October 31st. If this extended handling time won’t work for you, let us know and we can cancel the transaction. Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding:)”Be sure to set a buffer shipping date. It takes time to get home and ship out 40 or 50 packages.
I use business policies in one of my stores and all you need to do is edit each shipping policy you have by changing the handling time. I have three shipping policies, so I edit each of them.
NOTE: only business days (Mon.-Friday) count in handling time. So a four week vacation would only require your handling time to be set at 20 days.

Can you still opt out of the business policies? If so where?
I’m having a hard time just changing the days I’m gone with out it effect the rest of the shipping info.

Perfect timing as we were trying to figure this out this morning. We are leaving this week for the Ebay open and a extended trip out west.
Cheryl could you clarify for me the process to add a banner to your listings.
I went to:
* Seller Hub
* Manage Store
* Checked: Vacation Settings
* Turn on
* Create Store Message
* Then Checked Box: Show People Date YOu Will be Back
*Select Date
Is this your process? I believe this will show up in our listings as a pre warning for our customers and then we can also follow up with a message directly to the buyer as you illustrated.
Thanks for your help.

Last week I cleaned up all my business policies and ended up with about 5-7 of them.
I then made duplicates of each and titled it Vac(then same description)Within the policies list you can quickly reassign all your listings to another policy – which I intend to do tomorrow and I am hoping is a matter of about 5-7 Clicks!

I’m scared of vacation mode! My main concern by putting my store on vacation mode is that it will push my listings down lower in search. This could be true for extended handling time but who really knows. I dont message the buyer after they purchase and item, I’m enjoying my vacation! If they message me, I respond immediately and let them know about the extended handling time. They are usually apologetic and patient. I also print out a message to the buyers and pack with the item so they know their item was not forgotten about. It doesnt hurt to offer a discount for a future purchase as a “thank you” for their patience. Never had a problem.
