Hello,
Just curious if anyone accepts cashier’s checks or money orders as a form of payment on ebay.
i saw this as an option and wanted to get some SCAVENGER LIFE insights! i think this has been discussed briefly in one episode but no full episode exists on just payments. thanks again guys! -

Yep, we have always accepted money orders and cashier’s checks. Probably sold 10 items this way in eight years. We just wait till the check is received and the payment clears before we ship.

cityseller, where did you “see this as an option”?
In the very early days of ebay, this was fairly common, today, as far as I know, it is prohibited by ebay policy. For a long time, you could accept such payments, but could not indicate that in your TOS. I think within the last few years ebay changed it policy so that these are no longer acceptable payment methods….I could be wrong though.
One thing: I think there might be a few categories where ebay does permits this.

This is probably true. When a buyer wants to pay by money order, they just message us first to ask. Then we explain how we must wait for it to clear before we ship. It’s always on low dollar items.

Can you just link to this page on eBay? The copy and paste info is difficult to read.

Jay,
As a practical matter, I think sellers can still get away with accepting such payments occasionally. But soliciting them, even indirectly, is a pretty big no-no. I’m not sure if the OP is asking about accepting a proffered payment, or if he is asking if it’s OK to say he will accept them in his listing. -

In the business policies, if you do not require immediate payment you can still select additional payment methods which are:
Money Order/ Cashier’s Check
Personal Check
Pay on pickup
OtherYou also have the option to select credit cards if you wish to process the payment yourself.
The downside is, if you require immediate payment, you cannot have these options checked.

Jay,
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/accepted-payments-policy.htmlcityseller,
Unless ebay has changed their policy, those options must comply with the rules I provided. In other words, yes, you can choose “personal check” but only for those categories where it is permitted.
Maybe something has changed, but I’m not aware of it….

Way back in the old days I accepted personal checks and money orders. I think you could choose that as a payment option. I remember going to the bank with about 10 personal checks once, then keeping track of when they cleared. In the early days, it seemed like most people tried to avoid paypal.
A quick word on money orders for the current ebayer. IF someone insists on sending you a money order, you should insist they buy a USPS postal money order and here’s why.
A USPS money order can be verified at the post office and cashed there if you have ID.
If you don’t believe me, next time you’re at the post office ask them.(It’s possible small rural post offices won’t have the equipment and/or cash on hand to verify/cash money orders though).
Cashiers checks are easy to forge, so I wouldn’t accept them.
The couple times buyers have asked to send me money orders, I told them I only accept USPS money orders and I never heard from them again.
