Not sure if or how this would work on ebay but when we’re searching to make a purchase we think it would be VERY helpful to know the total cost of an item WITHOUT needing to do the math. Might make things much easier so I wouldn’t have to exit the ebay app, pull up the calculator and go back to the ebay app.
Just trying to save potential customers some time and hassle while leveling the playing field a little.
Looking forward to any thoughts. Cheers!

It would be smart if eBay did that. Other than eBay changing how they show prices, not much sellers can do other than offer free shipping.
To be fair, Amazon doesnt show you total price. Amazon just shows the price of the item and says “free shipping” (if you have Amazon prime). You only know the shipping price when you check out.

Thank you, Jay. That’s right, Amazon doesn’t do it either BUT wouldn’t this be [another] nice way for eBay to differentiate themselves and rise above all others? Hmmm…

Good question. Im not sure I want people to see a total price right away because then it’ll make our prices look higher.
I like that postage cost is different from the item cost because postage is a different charge.

I agree, I like seeing a separate shipping cost, too. I’m sorry I wasn’t clear. I was thinking of three numbers can be shown: item cost, shipping cost and the total cost.
By the way, I’m always repeating one of your phrases around here: “free shipping is a lie” ’cause I’m not convinced buyers really know what it costs to ship an item. Of course, it might be because we live on the edge of the U.S. and 90% of our packages go to Zone 8!!

You can always post your suggestion for an ebay improvement here:
No idea if anyone from eBay would ever read it, but at least we have our ideas in one place.

Sorry. Didn’t mean to mess things up and post in the wrong place. I thought I did but I’m still learning my way here. I guess I should quit multi-tasking (listening to old Scavenger Life podcasts while editing photos and then listing them on eBay…).

Isn’t this already in the “How eBay can improve” section? That’s where the link took me. Unless Jay moved it?
No biggie. Just asking.

You’re right! Im a dummy.
This was posted in the right place. I forget how smart Scavengers are.

You’re far from a dummy, Jay. After all you’ve accomplished? Sheesh! Who else could rant about those selling “get rich quick” books and then pontificate about liability insurance in the same podcast (#188)? 😉

This week I was shopping on ebay and of course sorting by “Lowest price plus shipping.” 2 identical items next to each other in search – one had the very exciting SHIPS FREE!!!!!!! notice , and the other one didn’t. Of course, the total cost for either item was the same.
Why is “free shipping” such a push? ebay does the math and presents the total to the buyer. Even if there is calculated shipping, it’s still the same to me. I’ll compare the pictures, the description, etc., if the total price is the same, who cares?
And if I have an item that I have researched and priced correctly, I would rather have a marketing message that I choose – that I deem important… “carefully packed” – Make an Offer!” or “our descriptions describe the item and do not include a list of reasons that we really don’t want to deal with anyone since that one buyer messed up 10 years ago.” (that’s a joke, folks!)
Give the merchant the opportunity to offer our own message instead of shoving the entire ebay community into narrow cattle chutes – I think it would work!
Caveat, I hate Free Shipping.

I’m with you. I guess the eBay MBA’s made the decision that Free Shipping and Free Returns would be their big play thing for 2018.
I think buyers are becoming oblivious to “free shipping” and just look at total price. Just like buyers are mostly smart about “50% sale!!!” when they see that the price was raised by 50% and then a sale applied.

It’s only different in presentation. “lowest price + shipping,” sorts the listings but still breaks out cost of item plus shipping.
What if all eBay prices were just price of item with the shipping cost included. One total price for each item. eBay would dynamically calculate the prices based on shipping cost and location of buyer.
It’s kind of a nutty idea but would eliminate the “free shipping” silliness since it’s all really just “shipping included”.
