Mon 3/20.. Buyers makes purchase
Tues 3/21 Item is shipped and picked up by USPS in the morning.
Wed 3/22 Buyer requests to cancel sale due to late shipping as he’s leaving 3/25. I respond that item was shipped 3/21. Later on 3/22 tracking shows up at my local Post Office.
Sat. 3/25 Buyer requests full refund because item did not arrive.Item shipped first class. There is a Priority option. Buyer never contacted me prior to purchase regarding his time frame. I live in California and buyer is in Florida.
I’m calling Ebay. This delay is not my fault, but the Post Office didn’t do me any favors.
Will I be charged return shipping for the trip back?
Update: I just talked to Ebay. As item has not been delivered, buyer cannot request refund. I was told to ignore refund request at this time. Buyer had informed me that item will be refused upon delivery. If and when item is returned, I should discuss a refund with the buyer.
Boy this is fun.. NOT.

click on the item. put the buyers shipping zip in the shipment tab and see what the estimated delivery date was for First Class. did it arrive by then? then you’re covered.

I believe item was suppose to arrive today, Saturday 3/25.

To me, the time from 3/21 to 3/25 seems quick for first class mail from CA to FL. The buyer should have seen a window of dates that the item should arrive within, not a specific date. I think that there is a way to look up that window, but I’m not sure how to do it. Either way, you are not responsible for how long it takes the post office to deliver something.
However, to deal with this buyer, first class shipping can be refused and it will not cost anything to get it back to you. Someone did this to me once, and the package had tracking getting back to me the same way it had getting there. So, tell him to go ahead and refuse the package as planned.
You can refund him the payment when the package is back in your hands. You shouldn’t have to refund the shipping.

If you have stated in your listing that all items in the original shipment must be returned in the same condition as you shipped them then you should be covered. I had someone send back part of a shipment, ages ago, and I was covered. It would be interesting to know if eBay refunded the buyer but I didn’t call eBay to find out. Recently I sold some jeans and they just marked the padded flat rate envelope “return to sender please credit”. I received them with tracking and refunded less my restocking fee.

The buyer was staying in a hotel room and left today. I imagine he told them at the hotel to refuse the package.. who knows.
I believe the 3/25 date was an Ebay estimate. I think they just put one date, which is generally very optimistic.
If the buyer had sent me some communication before his purchase, I could have advised him to opt for Priority mail, or as a courtesy, I may have walked it over to the Post office myself. Of course, none of this was done, so here we are.
If it comes back unopened, I’m probably just going to refund him 100%. I can already smell bad feedback and I’d rather pay him, block him and move on.

I just read the “Feedback Left for others” from this seller. he left 8 and 5 of them are negative.
I’m thinking I should just accept the return, in the hopes that 5 days will go by and I can close it. If this guy has the chance he’s going to leave a negative.

I can see that being a good plan especially if the hotel doesn’t refuse it like they are supposed to.
In addition, if you have him saying that he purchased this item while staying a limited time in a hotel, I think that you would have a very good case to remove any negative feedback should that happen.

The smartest move would probably be to refund him 100% now and move on with my life. This has already taken too much of my time. It’s not a very expensive item…..
However I just can’t do that. It’s not in my DNA. If I get the item back I’ll give him a 100% refund.. otherwise he gets no refund.

he opened a return case right? and there is no tracking? what is the 5th business day that you can call about it? i’m thinking that’s the right way. call and get it closed if it’s not there on that day.

If I agree to accept the return today, then I guess the next business day is a week from Monday? I was going to wait until the delivery, or attempt was made, but I suppose there is no reason to.
As someone else indicated there may be tracking on the “return to sender”, but there shouldn’t be tracking on my return label.
So should I agree to accept the return to get the 5 day clock turning , or did it start to turn when he requested the return?
Thanks.

correct, the timer starts ticking only when you accept the return. if you don’t accept the return at all, ebay will close it after 30 days, but not before the buyer has a chance to ask ebay to step in. in which case they will most likely fully refund the buyer.

Thanks Ryanne..
I agreed to accept the return yesterday… The clock is ticking. Ebay says he has until 4/03 to return it. The tracking last showed package is out for delivery.
Hopefully this will all be done, one way or another by next Monday..
Thanks all…

Update:…..
Monday 3/27 Tracking shows package was delivered.
No tracking activity after that… also no activity to the return case.
Tuesday 4/04 I called Ebay and the case was closed in my favor.
Listening to your experiences with returns and grumpy buyers, really gave me the insight on how to handle this case.
Thank you for the podcast….

The item “return to sender” showed up at my doorstep today 5/15. The tracking shows it left Florida 5/06.
No contact from the buyer yet.
Oh well…
