Buyer purchased shoes from me on Ebay and returned them due to fit. I offer returns but not “free returns” therefore I did not refund her originally shipping. Last night she messaged saying she received less than $21 back from her $40.xx purchase. I refunded her the full purchase price of $29.99 so I assume the reason she received less than $21 was because eBay kept out $9.xx to cover the return shipping.
My questions since I myself have never returned an eBay purchase: What does eBay disclose to the buyer at the time they initiate a return? Is it obvious to the buyer that they will be paying for the return shipping? Is there any place where they are instructed that their initial shipping cost will not be refunded? If the buyer throws a fit, what recourse do they have against me at this point? Since I’ve already explained that shipping wasn’t included in the return, can I ghost her messages to me at this point?
Part of me wants to tell the buyer that if they want to spend $29.99 on shoes that retail for over $100, they can’t expect to get free shipping both ways but that’s not going to help the situation so I’m going to leave that comment to myself.

Taking a look at her feedback left for others, she leaves negative feedback for all of her purchases (except one) and includes the same comment “The quality of this item is not like the image..it is very cheap..do not buy” So I guess I have a “Karen” on my hands. Great.
Would anyone refund her original shipping just to get her off of your back or do you leave it alone? On one hand, for $12.99 I can probably be done with it, although that doesn’t guarantee she won’t leave me bad feedback. On the other hand, I think she is probably buyer who games eBay’s system by intimidating sellers and I don’t want to reward her for that.

That’s a crappy situation for you. If I were you, I would not refund her original shipping. I would just refer her to ebay cutomer service if the numbers don’t appear to add up. Explain that the system is automated and you basically just “press a button” to close the return so there is no issue on your end.
If she wants to waste 2 hours on the phone with ebay to try and worm her way back into getting $8 back, that is on her. Make her earn it!

Thank you, I like the language you used about the system being automated. I’m going to wait to respond to her for a few hours but when I do, I’m going to include language about the process being automated and refer her to Customer Service.
These kind of buyers are just a cost of doing business. Fortunately they are few and far between and it’s all online, not face to face!

That’s great advice, Retro. I wouldn’t have thought of that! I’m going to keep it in mind for when I have a similar experience.
JB, sorry you’re having this hassle. Although I still have current inventory and Death Piles, I’ve stopped sourcing all women’s fashion because they’re so difficult to deal with. Men know what size they need and seldom fuss about returns.

I would not refund her either. Also if you have to talk to Ebay point out she leaves negative for every transaction. I really don’t think even if you refund her she will go away. Some people are just out to be difficult. Like retro says make her work for it. You did your part.

Buyer continued to message me and stated that eBay told her that I owe her more money (insert eyeroll here). At that point I stopped responding. A rep at Ebay told me to block her and said she would report the buyer for harassment. I’m not sure that ever actually results in anything but I’m moving on.
