I sold a black velvet coat. I do a lot of selling — about 100 items per month. I know how to check clothes before listing. She messaged me and said there was a white spot on a sleeve. I offered a return at my expense. She is silent for a week. She messaged me today saying she had it dry cleaned for $25 and “what should we do about this”. I called eBay and the agent tells me I should get the buyer to open a case, and that it will close in my favor because she has altered the item. She said I could not open a case, but the buyer has to do it.
Does you guys agree? Anyone have experience with this working in their favor? Thanks.

I’d be interested to hear how other more experienced sellers would handle this and what their experience has been, but it is my understanding that you are covered because you have documentation that she altered the item. In addition, I do believe the case for return can be closed because she has probably passed the return deadline.

You could say something like – I am sorry, but now that the item has been altered and the deadline for return has expired, it does not qualify for a return – This will probably prompt her to open a case. I would offer that you not get into a back and forth with the buyer after you have sent the buyer the message rejecting the return.

Other more experienced sellers might have a different perspective.
You always have the option of calling eBay tomorrow and let them know that you just want to make sure you are following policy before proceeding forward.

Is she still within the 30 day return policy?
What if you told her to return it, along with a copy of the receipt. Do not promise anything, just say return it.
Once you have the coat, and the receipt, you can choose how to handle this. I mean, if there REALLY was a spot you missed, you would want to return her purchase plus shipping both ways, right?
Asking for the receipt is just ammunition for your case. If you need it, if you suspect fraud, you can use it in your “altered” defense. Remember, you did not promise anything.
My guess is that it will not be returned, because there is no receipt. Just a shakedown.

Until she opens a case, there is no problem. This is why we sometimes just ignore a buyer’s message if they aren’t asking for anything specific. eBay doesnt require you to have long conversations with buyers.
You offered her a choice. She still hasnt made a decision on what to do. So the Silent Method should kick in.
If the buyer does open a case, the eBay rep is correct that they will back you up since she admitted to altering the item. It was the buyers choice to dryclean the coat. That decision has nothing to do with you selling her the coat.
Stay silent. Stay strong.

At this point I too would not respond at all.

That’s like buying a used car and you notice a dent after you get home.
You take it somewhere and get the dent fixed.A week later – you go back to the seller and say .. hey that car had a dent and I had it fixed for $300.. what should we do about this.
What would the car seller say?
Keep us updated on any development.

In my experience, “What should we do about this?” is code for “I’m fishing for a partial refund.” I feel more annoyed than conciliatory toward the buyer if I see those words.

I recently had an item that was nwot and the buyer said it had significant wear when she received the jacket. She used those same words, what can we do about this. Sometimes you get a buyer that can not be satisfied. She wanted some money back and I never offered a partial refund, just a full refund with a return.Stick to your gut feeling and don’t communicate with her. If she truly wants a refund she will return the coat. As long as you didn’t tell her to get the coat cleaned and you would cover the cost (and you didn’t) you are safe. Buyers remorse comes in all sizes and unfortunately this seems to be a common way to force a partial refund. Ask for a copy of the receipt and that will prove that she altered the coat. Then you have your ammunition for fighting the return. If you don’t get the copy then you probably won’t hear from her again.

Me personally, I’d ask for a copy of the receipt and go ahead and refund the cleaning cost.
You would be perfectly in the right in sticking to your guns and telling them that having the coat cleaned before clearing it with you is their responsibility. That is how it would go in any other case. You’ll probably get a retaliatory negative feedback though.

I’m with RetroWV.
It’s too late for this time, but I would have asked for a photo of the stain when they first contacted me. Anything to avoid an INAD return, which comes with a high cost: either you go through the aggravation of trying to prove them wrong, or you have to pay for shipping both ways.

Update: Even though I had to live with her negative feedback for four days, eBay sided with me in the case. She was not allowed to return it and her feedback was removed. I truly believe there was no mark. There is also no such thing as a $25 dry cleaning bill for a velvet coat in my area — maybe $8 if you don’t have a coupon ($6 if you do). I think she was just fishing for a discount. Her lack of response to my initial return offer proved she wanted the coat all along. Thanks for all the input.
