Are you concerned about safety in your warehouse? This is a question I have always asked myself.
I used to work at different Ford Plants in the office area. It was required that if you ever went on to the plant floor, you had to wear ear and eye protection.
So, in my warehouse (my basement), I have always thought I should do something similar to the plants I worked at. Eye protection is a good idea, but no need for ear protection.
But my main concern was foot protection. I recently dropped a container that just missed my toes. I knew right then that I should start wearing steel toe shoes. I decided that if I came across the right pair of shoes, I would buy them. Well, that was today (12/27). I found a pair just like the ones listed here for $15: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Worx-By-Red-Wing-Steel-Toe-Shoes-Slip-On-Oxfords-Work-Slip-Resistant-Mens-10-WW/153690360459?hash=item23c8a8ca8b:g:fHoAAOSwph1dKVyk
I must admit that I hesitated to pay that much, but I knew I had to do it. I knew I would regret it if I hurt my toes and looked back knowing that I could have prevented it for a mere $15. So I took the plunge and I feel great about it now.
These are great because I can slip them on and slip them off whenever I need them. I feel so much more safe now going to my warehouse. Things could still happen, but my toes will be safe. My new rule is to always wear my steel toe shoes when going into the warehouse.

Ear protection’s also good. How tinnitus drove musician to brink of suicide.
Fortunately, according to some DNA testing site, I’m one-third Neanderthal, so I don’t need to wear a safety helmet, or need a licence to hunt mammoth.

I thought for sure you were going to link to the video of the Shropshire cheese warehouse disaster.

I love the British way of adding commentary to everything, especially the additional text that appear under all the photos for Daily Mail articles. “SHE’S GAZING OFF INTO THE DISTANCE.” Okay, thanks for letting us know!

I think calling our storage a “warehouse” would be overdoing it. Shelves are 6′ tall and the heaviest plastic bin might be 40 pounds. Maybe straining my back might be the worst thing that could happen.

No, I hadn’t heard about the Shropshire cheese warehouse disaster. Wow, that is a great video, but I would hate to be that fork lift driver.
I also had a similar thing happen (very small scale) in my warehouse. I accidently knocked over a stack of 18 gallon containers and the whole row of 4 stacks, 6 high fell over. Maybe I need a hard hat too?!

Sounds like you need sturdier shelves 🙂

Jay,
My containers are not on shelves. They are just free standing.
I have thought about putting them on shelves, but the shelves would waste too much space. I was thinking of using PVC piping, but that would be a lot time and work.

Understood. If you’re worried about safety, I’d say investing in solid shelving is smart. A stack of 40lbs bins would be a problem. Since our bins are on steel shelving, only one bin would fall at a time.
We got these are a super sale several years ago. Spent about $1000 to kit out our whole space. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Gladiator-24-in-D-x-77-in-W-x-72-in-H-4-Tier-Steel-Freestanding-Shelving-Unit/1000003004

Jay,
These are my lighter 18 gallon containers and don’t weigh nearly as much.
But true, I do need to do something to make those safer. In the short run, just moving the heavier ones to the bottom and removing the topmost container should do it.

Jay,
Also, 40 pounds dropped from 6 feet could do some damage on your foot.
40 pounds is also probably the limit on my containers.

“Sea of mess”? Surely that’s a sea of cheese.

I am forever having books from my Amazon inventory fall on my head as I pull. I am too short to reach some stock, but I manage. I just cry for a minute, restack the books and continue working. The big safety upgrade for this year has been wearing slippers as I pull. I got the type that keep the feet warm and cozy too, so bonus.

This is what I use to be able to safely reach items on the top shelf ( 7 ft) in my storage area. 3-step rolling step ladder

You know, that’s a good and sensible idea, but I’d probably end up tripping over something like that all the time when I’m not using it, even when folded. My basement is almost completely full at this point of both listed & unlisted inventory. I do having a metal folding chair that I could possibly use for the tall shelves, hmmm.
