I’m cleaning up my business policies and notice that I have an unused “no returns accepted” policy. I always offer 30 day hassle-free returns and my return rate is pretty low, very little drama. I understand that accepting returns is the norm now and I have no problem with it whatsoever.
But I’m wondering when it would be legitimately smart to not accept returns. What kinds of items might you not accept returns for, if you are the type of seller who typically does offer returns?
Can you list some ideas of types of items you wouldn’t accept returns for? THANKS!

I do not take returns for anything that is damaged or nonworking. It would be hard for a buyer to say that a nonworking item is “not as described”, and I really don’t want something like that back.
I recently sold a CB transceiver that powered on, but I had no way to test it. I’ve sold other vintage electronics or media that were either non-working or not able to test.
I have some damaged silver plated items that need repair. If someone has the ability to solder, they could get a very nice server from me for cheap, but I won’t take a return.
Otherwise, for the vast majority of my items, I will take returns.

We don’t take returns on furniture that is local pickup.

The transceiver I sold:

Thanks, Sharyn. OMG, I wouldn’t want any of those items back either! 🙂 Especially that fridge. Great job on your listings though!

Personally, I don’t accept returns for anything unless I failed to mention a significant defect in my description. I spend a ton of time photographing and describing my items, so there should be no reason to return something. I’m probably a dinosaur with this policy, but it hasn’t seemed to impact my sales.

I have 30 day free return shipping on everything right now I think. However, I’m not dogmatic about it—something like that fridge, I’d go with no returns.

Sharyn, with the shipping cost, I don’t know if you’ll sell that silverware. The Eales relish tray was sold for only $18.99 last year.

And the 3-tiered platter went for $15.99
https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-art-deco-silver-chrome-three-1084380796If I were you, I’d break up that listing. They’ll sell easier if you sell them separately bc the shipping will be lower. You can probably get $12 – $16 for the 3-tiered platter if you sell it on its own. Then advertise the other for $12 with BO. Just IMHO, of course

@Amatino – Thanks for the advice! I think that I have enough photos to break those up without having to take new ones. (They need new photos, but I don’t have time right now).
I was testing different lighting options when I took those, and it didn’t work out too well. I ended up finally buying special photo lamps after that.
I think I might use some of the key words from Worthpoint. They might help!

I generally break up plated flatware sets too (Knife Fork Spoon). People are often looking for replacements and they are much cheaper to ship. The Box I sell separately too.
