I just ordered a common household item from an ebay mega seller and got the following automatic message after my purchase.
“We hope you enjoy your purchase.
If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Also, If you would like to open return request, please using these reason below to get a free return shipping fees,1. Didn’t Like Item
2. Ordered By Mistake
3. Found Better Price
4. Doesn’t fit
5. Changed mind”Kinda funny they are trying to trick you into paying return shipping if you dont like the item. I dont offer free returns but this is an interesting way of doing it. I wouldn’t do this but who am I to judge.

Do they offer free returns in general? I could see this being used by a seller who offers free returns but is sick of getting INADs (which negatively affect service metrics) b/c buyers think that the only way to get free return shipping is to say Item Not As Described.

I bought a new item (which turned out to be defective) from a high volume seller a while back.
Initially, I would have been willing to accept a partial refund, as I knew I could salvage the item and modify it for my use.
The seller played so many games to avoid paying any refund, that by the time he offered a partial refund, I refused and requested a return shipping label.
In the end the seller refunded me 100% and told me to keep the defective item.

Sounds like they offer free returns and are pointing out that there are ways to get the free return shipping without choosing INAD. Not a bad idea really, but I do wish they would use proper grammar. It would look a lot more professional and give buyers a little more peace of mind.

With a standard return, you do not have to refund original shipping costs. Pretty clever!

Retro Treasures, could you elaborate on that? I’ve only had a handful of returns so far, all for buyers remorse. (One INAD was thrown out by Ebay because the buyer had a history of fraud.)
I offer free returns on products that aren’t likely to be returned, but on clothing, I stick with buyer pays returns.
I offer free shipping for all first class items and flat rate padded envelope items. I do calculated shipping on all other items because the price disparity between zone 1 and 8 makes it hard to price otherwise.
Are you saying that if I charge for shipping, when I do a refund I don’t have to refund my original shipping cost? I’ve never seen that option and I would imagine it could lead to a lot of negative feedback. Could you walk me through the process? Cheers.

I don’t offer free shipping. When a buyer returns an item through a standard return, I have to “opt in” to refund their original shipping. There is a check box for original shipping that is by default unchecked.
I’ve argued with ebay over this. They swear it is not possible yet there it is plain as day every time I process a return.
Not a single customer has ever complained. They usually leave me positive feedback as well. With that kind of metric, why would I ever opt in?

Ya, that’s really cool. I’ll be sure to watch for it. Interesting to hear that your customers don’t complain over it.
There are so many glitches in eBay it’s not surprising that CSR’s aren’t familiar with everything. Heck, as we speak I still have the ability to select a restocking fee for my returns in my business policies. That was supposedly eliminated, but there it is plain as day. I haven’t selected to use it though because I can just imagine the issues it would cause if something went wrong. My store has lots of bugs as well…logos not showing, categories not being listed, etc. Frustrating, but I’m patient because I know there is a lot of updating going on. It will probably work itself out in time.
