Well my good luck ran out with the This Monsters University Party Accessories Listing.
Can you guys have a look and tell me what you think.
Someone bought 2 sets of plates, thinking they were too received on of everything pictured in the first photo.
I think I made it clear in the listing that each item is sold separately. I explained this to the customer and they are accusing me of being a scammer.
I am trying REAL HARD to detach my ego and cause less suffering in the world.
This person is really upset over paper plates.
I offered to let him return them for a refund but he keeps demanding I send him two of everything in the listing.
So my question to the group –
Is this listing misleading? What would you do to update or change?
How would you handle this customer? I am not worried about negative feedback, I am sure I can have it removed. I just want to do the right thing.
Thoughts?

@debitendcredits – Sure, when someone looks at the photo, they may think that they are getting one of each. However, when they pull down the menu, they see that they have to select one item.
I get that eBay is a different retail sort of site than most, so a buyer may not understand this type of listing. However, when the menu comes down, he sees what goes. He may forget what he did when he purchased the item, but it was clear.
Some sellers put “choice of one” in the listing title. Maybe just have a general Monsters University logo or character and change the title to something like “Monsters University Birthday Party Accessories Choice of One”? Or something in that vein?
In the meantime, this buyer might really think that they were supposed to get one of each, or maybe they are the scammer. They know the rules, and they think that they can force you to give them more by complaining. I can’t tell you which is which, but I suggest you stand your ground. Or maybe just refund him and let him keep the plates? But then put him in your rejected buyers list or whatever that is called.

I think you made it very clear. No worries.

It is confusing until you get the drop down. There is also no description section on the eBay mobile site to explain the listing.
I avoid this style of listing for this specific reason. I did do a huge variable listing for markers and I decided to avoid any photo showing the assortment of colors or multiple markers.
if you are selling items from the listing don’t sweat it. Tell this person “if you are unhappy you can return for a refund” then go silent. If you get a negative, try to have eBay for business remove it. If they don’t respond to the feedback and move on with life.

Thanks for the input.
After a few more emails from the customer, I decided to just give him his money back. The costs of goods were negligible, all I really had to eat was the shipping cost. I feel confident I was in the right (and certainly was not worried about negative feedback) but it sounded like this person was in having a rough time with life.
It wasn’t worth the fight.
Time to move on with life!

Yeah, I could see it being a bit confusing, but the dropdown selection when purchasing clears that up. I think you handled it well. Low-value items aren’t worth protracted arguments with customers.
When you are selling something like Monster’s University party plates, this is probably a parent trying to give his/her small child a special birthday party. Some parents can get really mean and nasty when things like that don’t go as they envisioned.

It’s not a scam and you did nothing wrong. You didnt make the mistake of some sellers that show multiple items and then in the description say “price is for one”.
Personally, I don’t like listing that show a whole pile of items, and then use a drop down to further explain how it all works. I like one item, one listing.
Assume you did this to save on listing fees or not needing to take multiple photos/listings?

@Jay no I do these type of listing when selling like items. It’s the easiest way to save on shipping for small lite weight things. Volume discounts are easily applied at check out and customers are encouraged to purchase more.
Works great for Game Board Pieces:
Scrabble Game Travel Edition REPLACEMENT .5″ Wood Tiles & Accessories
I also use this technique when I am selling similar items that someone may want multiples of that I can keep restocking.
Mix and Match Generic 3 inch Standard 8mm & Super 8mm Film Reels
Most people shopping for 8mm take up reels don’t care about the color shape and brand, but some people do. This allows me to keep all of these items in one listing and the ability to offer simple volume pricing. Additionally when ever I get a new batch of reels, I can just add variation to the listing. Check it out.
I have noticed more problems with “Variation Listings” since eBay updated the mobile app.
Hopefully they will find a fix.

Nice. In that case, you just ran into a grumpy buyer. It was smart to refund and block. Sounds like all your other buyers are reasonable for these items.

When I make my variation listing on the desktop, I put in a photo of the actual single item for each variation. Unfortunately, I think currently in the mobile app that is not shown to the buyer. So it might be best practice for us to specifically put “ONE
pack xyz” in that area. However, you will still get someone like this from time to time and all of the same comments above still apply. There are always people who don’t read/in a hurry, etc.

First of all, yeah I totally get bugged initially when something like this happens, but it’s rare. I can usually see one or two ways I could have made something clearer. However, I would totally do a variation listing on something like this. Alternatively, I might lists lots though as a buyer I would like your flat shipping and quantity discount. In any case I always just refund or partially discount at buyer’s option under $25/30 and move on. The minute I get a whiff of aggressiveness I start returning or refunding. I consider it a cost of doing business on EBay. My lack of negative feedback is worth more to me than being right or the time and frustration to contact EBay. Listening to SL helped give me this mentality.

@chrsitineR
“as a buyer I would like your flat shipping and quantity discount.”
Exactly! On low cost items, it’s all about these boxes:

I have never sold using a variation listing but they are very popular in the trading cards niche. Especially among sellers who run low cost listings, every card from a particular set for example. What a lot of them do is put “you pick” or “pick from list” or “choose from list” in the title. example
I am sure you’re covered with eBay either way (as you should be), but this seems like an easy fix to prevent this problem from happening again.

I also looked at it on my phone and your listing is clear that you are only buying one of the selected items not all of them. Unfortunately, some people are just …. special.

Sadly, some people are one paper plate away from a mental health crisis. It is noble to not want to cause harm to others or contribute to their suffering, but some people are “on fire” before you enter the picture as an online seller, and very well will be after you leave the picture. There isn’t much you can do other than keep your side of the street clean, which you clearly have done here. People will say nasty things sometimes, it is normal although unpleasant.
