I took most of last week off and stayed unplugged for almost the entire week, enjoying the tranquility and juxtaposition of the 19th century with the modern in the Amish County, Pennsylvania, USA. Of course I had to check out some thrift stores in the area (great thrifts and antiques in that area) and while I didn’t find as much old and weird stuff as I might have liked, I found a few things that should at least cover the dining portion of my trip.
My best score was a Shout! Factory DVD box set of the Ultimate Goldbergs which regularly sells in the $50 range. A fun surprise to find something so unique among all the worship, hunting and generic TV and movie DVDs.
What did you find this week?

I must say that Pennsylvania is one of my favorite places to visit for thrifting, food and beautiful countryside and quaint towns. While Son lived in New Jersey, we traveled to Lancaster and also Reading, where we had relatives…they’ve since moved to the Rochester, NY area. BUT Daughter just moved to Belcamp, MD which is only about an hour from Lancaster… Planning trips to see them in the fall..
Our best score was a 2″ LE Smith Turquoise Blue Hurricane lamp that might bring 90.00 and a crystal loving cup gold award that we’ve got up for 70.00 – Almost every week, we bring home boxes of books, magazines and paper – I estimate about 1K from last weeks two boxes. Tomorrow we are going to go take around 7 boxes of culls and donate them far away from us! We’ve been working diligently on organizing around 2K magazines we’ve collected over the past 4-5 years (I know!) and vintage recipe booklets that we plan on lotting up. Then we’ve got the vintage magazines that date back to collecting them up to 20 years ago… (I know!) and then.. 3 racks of clothing, scarves and ties… not to mention one big box of tupperware from my long ago days as a Tupperware Lady! Then we will mostly be caught up!

Lancaster is such an odd mix of 1800s, hipster/kitsch and modern small city. Cape May, New Jersey (exit 0 on the Garden State Parkway) is somewhat similar and I like it there maybe even a bit more than Lancaster. Probably because of the beach.
Congratulations on the 7 (!!!) boxes of donations. I’ve taken five or six boxes to the local library recently and didn’t regret it for even a second once all those duds were gone.
I do a lot of library sales and have started adding magazines and yearbooks to my scavenger’s repertoire lately since:
1. The people with the scanners don’t care about them.
2. They’re always, always dirt cheap (usually 50 cents or even loss, never more than $1 or $2)
3. I find them interesting, especially obscure magazines and vintage yearbooks.
Plus the buyers are usually chasing after some memory or they’re collectors, so they usually leave positive feedback with nice comments.

I haven’t been scavenging much lately, but I have a few neighbors who are in the process of moving or are planning a future move. I’ve been grabbing stuff they’ve put out for taking/garbage. A few weeks ago, I picked up a hand thrown pottery set of a decanter with five wine glasses. Last week, I grabbed some vintage games. One wasn’t complete, so I am selling the parts.
Last weekend, I did go to a yard sale where I purchased a vintage Trav-L Bar for $5. It isn’t complete, but I should get $40 or so for it.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/235081873082 From the piles. This is like my favorite category of item to sell, so I put the obnoxious price on it.

Well the big scavenge of the weeks goes without saying…
I had actually lost hope on that sale. They never called me and I didn’t see a yard sale sign out Friday evening. We set out to yard sale, feeling kinda bummed. I checked 2 other sales in the neighborhood and decided to drive past the premium hoarder house before leaving the neighborhood…and they were out having a sale! As we got out of the van I heard the guy tell his wife “there he is! There he is!” Apparently she misplaced my number as she had wanted to call me. Lol! Now we have firmly established communication.
I spent $5500 at that sale Saturday. Whoah!!!!
Other sales were no slouches either. $100 items were laying around like plastic eggs on Easter.
Let’s see what I can remember off the top of my head of the bigger items. Yes there are so many good items that I forget them until I empty my van throughout the week.
- Xbox 360 250gb and a stack of games on an ask – $20
- Cars Lightning Mcqueen DVD/TV combo, CD player, alarm clock, and a bin of die cast*
- Rock Crawler RC Truck for $100 – sells for $300
- Bose Cinemate surround sound for $40 – sells for $150
- England Doc Martin Boots
* I’ll be back to the Cars sale in August as they have an entire closet packed full of Pixar Cars Die cast. All in mint condition. I’ve bought a massive collection of Pixar cars diecast before and it was incredibly lucrative. The die cast cars can be worth a TON.

I’m sure you would have connected with the hoarder heirs even if you hadn’t driven past them again…but boy am I glad you did! Can’t wait to see how you process such a huge haul and what your next steps will be. No matter how you go, this is gold. Take note, ex-podcast listeners who are still checking the forums. There is a ton of quality content here!!!
What’s funny is you had a good weekend of picking even without the hoarder sale. You covered the highlights, but what kind of quantity of bread and butter $20 to $80 items do you bring home after a weekend like this?
I’m realizing that if I ever start to do yard sales like you do, I’m going to need to work out of something bigger than a disorganized** two-bedroom apartment!
** it’s coming along I swear, all those flat rate boxes that I’ve sold have made a little dent into the mess…but there’s always more to do!! It’s a nice life on weeks like this though…
